USF’s worst fears came true today when the school announced senior QB Matt Grothe was out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee suffered in the second quarter of Saturday’s win vs. Charleston Southern.
“Obviously, I am disappointed because you never think this could happen to you,” Grothe said in a statement. “It’s a team game and I am still going to be very involved with my teammates and the coaches. I am going to do everything I can to help the Bulls continue to win.”
USF coach Jim Leavitt reiterated his thoughts from after Saturday night’s game.
“Matt’s a franchise guy and an even better human being,” Leavitt said. “We all know that. What he’s done in college football is extraordinary. He has been one of the greatest names out there. We all know that and our entire program feels bad for him. Matt is a special, special guy.”
FSU coach Bobby Bowden was unaware of Grothe’s injury. The Seminoles stunned No. 7 BYU 54-28 Saturday in Provo.
“That’s a shame. I’ve been watching him for the past two years. He’s one of the best I’ve seen,” Bowden said during his Sunday teleconference with the media.

Matt….you have no idea who I am but I know you and I have never followed and believed in a USF player as much as have followed and believed in you.
Thanks for the 4 bowls (2 victories), beating AU, the #2 and #10 rankings, thanks for making believe that as long as the game was within reach and you were in the game…USF had a chance to win. Thanks for making USF relevant!
All my best Matt…you are USF.

Is there any chance for a medical hardship so he can come backnext year?

Vince, no there isn’t. He redshirted as a freshman and this was his fifth season. I double checked with his father and he confirmed that he’s done playing for USF.
