Local product Tyrone Timmons became the latest Storm player to agree to a new contract. The team announced the former Tampa Bay Tech standout, who completed his rookie season in 2008, has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Tampa through 2010.
Timmons is the fourth player to get a new deal in the past week, joining receiver/kick returner Sedrick Robinson, receiver Hank Edwards and defensive back Byron Jones. The deals for those three players was reported Monday.
Jones and Edwards also have signed through the 2010 season, while Robinson received a one-year deal to keep him in Tampa for the 2009 season.
“This is a positive step for the future of this team,” Tampa Bay coach/general manager Tim Marcum said in a press release announcing the deals. “We extended the contract of two very promising young receivers, brought back a healthy and exciting return man and added depth to our defensive backfield.”
Timmons spent time on injured reserve and was inactive through the team’s first 12 games but made a big impact through the team’s final four games. He finished with 23 receptions for 267 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Edwards had a breakout year in his second AFL season, leading the team with 1,348 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns while finishing second with 85 receptions in 13 games.
Robinson, one of the top kick returners in AFL history, also played a big role for the Storm this season while battling a few injuries. He finished with 1,675 all-purpose yards.
Jones was limited to four games in 2008, but he was a player Marcum was very high on during training camp and had even cracked the starting lineup with his performance. He suffered a hamstring injury in the season opener, an injury that required a lengthy stay on injured reserve.
