NEW YORK—Tigers closer Fernando Rodney has decided to appeal the three-game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball today (along with an undisclosed fine) for his actions after Friday’s win over the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Rodney inexplicably fired a ball from the field into the press box after narrowly avoiding a blown save in the bottom of the ninth inning. He all but brushed off inquiries from reporters after the game and Tigers manager Jim Leyland did the same the next day.
I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised by MLB’s decision here. Because no harm was done, they could have just fined Rodney and let it stand there. But as I wrote Friday night, this could have been a very bad situation if that ball had come anywhere near a kid in the stands. Just a stupid thing to do.
