After Tuesday’s initial practice was rescheduled to a later date because of rain, USF opened spring practice Wednesday.
One immediate change from past seasons: first-year DT coach John Hendrick will not allow any profanity from the players.
Hendrick, an ordained minister, joined the Bulls’ staff after a one-year stint at Division I-AA South Carolina State. Hendrick also worked with USF coach Jim Leavitt in 1991-92 when they both were assistants at Kansas State.
New DE coach Kevin Patrick, a member of USF’s original staff in 1996, worked with the Bulls for the first time since the 1998 season.
After practice, Leavitt said “the road to the Big East Championship starts here. If you guys work as hard as you can every day, we will win a championship. I guarantee it. Some of you are there already and some of you need to pick up the pace.”
Among the position changes, Jeremiah Warren has moved from offensive guard to offensive tackle and junior Shane McElwain has moved from defensive end to tight end.
Former Bulls CBs Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams were at Wednesday’s practice – sorry they don’t have any additional eligibility – getting ready for Friday’s Pro Day at USF. Jenkins, who ran a 4.38 second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, said he probably wouldn’t run the 40 on Friday, but would participate in the other drills.

Good for Coach…glad somebody isn’t afraid to take a stand for something out of the ordinary. Profanity is so common, it’s completely lost its effect! The HC at Vanderbilt did the same thing…it seems to have helped the Commodores!

Anyways, Coach Leavitt had no friggen clue who I was. Coach Hernandez had left for somewhere else. He said if you want to play, there are tryouts in the winter. I gave him a sailor’s mouthful that he probably hadn’t expected. And then he immediately and kindly escorted me out of his office and said that language like mine was not tolerated in his office. He said you waited six years, you can wait six more months. Coach Leavitt might swear from time to time, but he does demand respect from his players. That six months benefitted me immensely… and I finally got to live the dream… although in retrospect, it did take me awhile to lose the sailor’s mouth (I still feel bad for some of my frosh professors for my occassional slip up).

I don’t think this is really any different than how Jim runs things anyways. The first time I met Coach Leavitt was in the summer of 1999 a month before my frosh year. I had just gotten out of the Navy and was two weeks removed from being at sea for the past three months on the submarine USS AUGUSTA SSN 710. I drove from Connecticut to Tampa in two days, and thought from a conversation with a coach from the year before (Coach Hernandez), that I would be able to walk-on right away (this coming from someone who had never started in high school and hadn’t played a down of football in seven years - gotta have big dreams).

Well, I’ll be pullling for USF to lose every game this season because of this self-righteous humorless misguided and stunted coach who is a dipstick and lickspittle and not so closeted fascist. The best men and athletes often swear. Great men swear. Great writers use profanity. Your vulgar and obscene word may be VERY different from mine.

Besides….are you kidding me with the no cussing thing. Hope Hendrick doesn’t get within firing range of CJL during a game. He’s worse than a sailor.
Thanks for the rant.

I know this no cussing policy is coming from one of the coaches, but lets get real about what we’re trying to do here (at least what I think we all assume we are trying to do here), and that’s consistently put a competitive football team on the field every year to help facilitate revenue to the athletic program and the school. You either strive to do that, or you end up in the Ivy League.
CJL is too good a commodity to have to put up with this garbage. No wonder he hasn’t signed the contract extension. He’ll be in the SEC one day (maybe sooner than later) we he finally gets fed up enough with all the Bull patties the school/admin keeps throwing at him.

This whole recent history about what USF is doing to the team is crazy. First we give CJL parking tickets for his tire touching the line. Then we boot the car of one of our possible starting DL men and then throw him in jail on top of that. Then we make the starting QB pick up trash or something for serving drinks to some chicks at a bar (like that doesn’t happen every night around USF). Then we try and act like USF (which is a good academic school) is Stanford (which is a great academic school) and cram that down CJL’s throat at the 11th hour of recruiting.

What’s up with Shane McElwain?? This guy’s had more position switches than Tyrone McKenzie has had tackles.
