Theismann envisions Favre in pewter

Posted Jul 23, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

Brett Favre won’t be throwing footballs for anyone but the Buccaneers this fall, according to Joe Theismann.

The former Pro Bowl QB of the Redskins says Favre’s familiarity with Jon Gruden’s offense makes Tampa the likely destination for the future Hall of Famer.

“I think the odds are better than 50-50 Favre ends up with the Bucs,’’ Theismann said Wednesday. “If Brett Favre plays football in 2008, I think it’s in Tampa.’‘

Favre, who turns 39 in October, has yet to petition the NFL for reinstatement, but the Packers have made it clear they intend to move on without the franchise icon and go with 24-year-old Aaron Rodgers under center.

Jeff Garcia made the Pro Bowl last season and led the Bucs to an NFC South title, but the 38-year-old QB is frustrated with his contract situation. On Tuesday, Bucs GM Bruce Allen said Garcia has been granted permission to skip the first weekend of training camp to attend a reunion of a college team that Garcia’s father coached to a 1973 national junior college championship.

“There’s something going down,’’ Theismann said when informed of Garcia’s surprising decision to miss the start of camp. “He’s not happy with his contract and the Favre rumors don’t help this situation. Brett has a stronger arm than Jeff and we know that Jon Gruden doesn’t think twice about changing quarterbacks. The feeling down there in Tampa seems to be ‘If I can get a guy to help my team win, I’m sorry I hurt your feelings.’ ‘’

Theismann said it’s clear Favre wants to play in the NFL this fall. The key is finding an offensive scheme he’s familiar with.

“To me, the No. 1 question is whether there’s a system he can get into right away,’’ Theismann said. “Adaptability to the system is the key. If you bring a Brett Favre into something other than the West Coast offense, you’d have to limit your offense. In the span of one training camp, he’d be ready to to lead the Bucs. He can’t go anywhere where the system is different.’‘

For the Bucs to swing a deal with Green Bay for Favre, timing becomes essential.

“You’re up against the clock,’’ Theismann said. “For him to be effective in Tampa, you’d have to get him into training camp quickly. Tampa makes the most sense, but the clock is ticking for any team that wants Brett Favre.’‘

Funny, Tampa fans are the biggest band wagon riders EVER!
The Bucs won their division last year and all anyone in Tampa talked about was how much of a difference Garcia made. Six months later, everyone is ready to jump on the Favre band wagon.LOL. Someone mention trading Simms for Favre…howabout trading him for a WR which is desperately needed.
Everyone was on the bus for the Rays 1/2 season, but now that they are slumping everyone jumps off the bus. I love it! It wont be long before they are out of first place, then second, then third and it will be even sooner that people will abondon them.
Anyway go Cowboys! Americas Team!!

BRETT FAVRE….TO THE BUCS. I LOVE IT….LETS GO GET HIM BOYS !!!! Gruden and Allen lets make this happen PULL THE TRIGGER !!!!  I’ve been praying for this for the last 2 months.  Green Bay is not going to except 2 QBs for him though I can gaurentee you that. Maybe 1 like Simms and a 2nd round draft pick and possibly another one. I LIKE Brett Favre but I wouldn’t give up a first round draft choice in this point in time for him. Theres to much talent coming out of college next season that we need.

according to foxnews…theres only two teams that brett wants to play for and were not one of the two teams…not only that…we have a bigger need at wr than we do at qb..garcia is solid and if he goes down…we have griese or mccown to fall back on…our o line is goin to be alot better this year which will help garcia…he need to get some PRIME recievers to help CATCH the ball…you can have the greatest qb in the world but if your recievers cant catch the ball…WHATS THE POINT…look at all the dropped passes we had last year…

havent noticed?,garcia has been a backup most of his career.he is a backup quality qb.we just happen to have a team of backup qbs and he was the best of the bunch.he threw 13 tds-thats weak.less than one td a game.good thing our d is so good.i would rather have bret over dancing like chicken with his head cutoff when there is no pressure jeff, who couldnt throw a deep ball to save his life.to suggest garcia is anywhere near the talent level of favre is absurd.garcia hasnt played a full season since 2002.hasnt throw for more than 13tds since 03(18td-13int)hasnt throw for 3000yds since 03. bret hasnt throw for less than 18tds or 3200yds since his rookie season with the falcons and hasnt missed a single game. hows that for prespective.

Get Favre, trade him on to Minnesota for Adrian Peterson(Not). Let Jimmy Wilkerson play QB and just hand off and run on every play, or just play without a QB alltogether. Oh, we did that for how many years? Just use the position for Zuttah, a lineman, or another running back. That also solves the WR problem because there is no one to throw the ball anymore or INT’s. 11 man running attack. Offense will be speedsters & monsters. If it doesn’t work, draft Tim Tebo next year if he enters the draft, & run some more. How’s that for thinking outside the Box? Complete paradigm shift. Lets just get on with the season!

Steve, please get your facts straight. Although I would relish having Favre as our QB, Garcia has spent very little time as a backup in the NFL. He has amassed 4 pro-bowls on the way. I don’t mind if you don’t like him for personal reasons, but don’t skew the facts.

Please don’t give up draft picks for Farve!!! It would take time to learn Jon’s play book and Garcis already knows it. Give Garcia a better contract and also Greg White!!

Por (Carl) on July 24, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Just let him play on the Bucs, its a good combination because Jeff Garcia is a good Scrambler and Farve a great pocket passer,I just hope he gives a 0 and doesn’t let the bucs down if Jeff Garcia gets injured this season.

Please don’t put anything that Joe “broken leg - whinner” Thiesmann says, sway you from anything.  Joe Theismann is a “has been” who is doing nothing more than trying to get someone to mention his name surrounding something that has anything to do with football.  He is a creep and an abulance chaser.  If we do have a shot a getting Brett - so be it - but don’t let Theismann say so.

im sorry ,garcia was a backup for 3 years before we picked him up. he started 4 or 5yrs for san fran.  He is still a backup quality qb and would be a backup on about 90% of the teams in the nfl. every other stat i stated is a fact though.  the numbers are what matter most. garcias best is still not as good as brets worst.

Hey Chuck, how do you really feel about Theismann? Don’t forget, Joe knows everything, and not just about football. Just ask him….I can’t stand him either. Watching that leg snap has to be one of my all time favorite highlight reels. Sadistic aren’t we? Go Bucs!!! Destroy the Saints! Arrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!!

BigBucFan - I can’t stand Theismann - they have kicked him off of most NFL sidelines and sports shows.  He needs to do something like being a commentator for syncronized swimming - but I’ll bet one of those old women will kick his #####.  Come on Grandma - dunk him one more time!  I would give anything to break his other leg.  He reminds me of a lawn knome.
Maybe we can put him on with Pro’s vs. Joe’s and he can go up against some 325 lb fat chick with a mohawk and a vicious mean streak.
GO BUC’S

Brett Farve is showing the kind of low class person he is. He needs to be the center of attention. If the press would leave it alone he would go away quietly. If we did aquire him who says he wouldn’t change his mind again if he didn’t get his way.

I have been a Bucs fan since the 76 season.  If Farve becomes a Buc I will have to root for another team.  Between him and Chucky I wouldn’t be able to stand it.

I agree Todd, those idiot fans have really got me fired up too. Talking all that trash. I just want that win bad. It’s gotten personal now. Maybe they can hire Joe Theismann to be their offensive Coordinator as well. The Saints are going down….
