What a great week on the water. With air temperatures still high and water temperatures the same, the fish are everywhere.
We caught bluefish, ladyfish, flounder, speckled trout, pompano and Spanish mackerel all over the flats on the south end of the bay. Low tides early in the week made them easy to find. We just fished the deeper edges and troughs to get our bite.
The pompano and flounder came out of the bigger sand holes and were caught on DOA CAL shad tail jigs in white with chartreuse ¼-ounce jig heads. We caught some of the bigger pompano I have seen on Tampa Bay in the last couple of years.
Most of the flats we fished were holding all six species. As long as the bait stays on the flats, this trend should continue.
I did get some good reports of quality redfish being caught on the docks on the south end as well. Mike Mahoney from TA Mahoney Co. reported catching good numbers of keeper-sized reds up around the Alafia River. He was working the big mullet schools on high tide in the afternoon with ¼- and ½-ounce gold spoons. He said to work the outside edges of the Mullet for best results.
Offshore, the amberjack, red grouper, kingfish and snapper bites all remain solid. No need to make a long run, as there are good numbers of fish in as little as 30 feet of water.
