An incredibly loose bunch in the Rays clubhouse today after Friday’s 2-0 victory against the Angels. A bit of talk about the three plays for the Rays that ended up on SportsCenter’s Top Plays last night (Crawford’s diving catch was second, although it took top honors on Baseball Tonight’s Web Gems). The other two Top Plays were Longoria’s homer and B.J. Upton’s diving catch.
There is such a different feel to this clubhouse than in years past. Obviously, winning is the main reason. But it’s not just that.
Before BP today, the Yankees-Tigers game was on three of the four TVs and most of the players were watching. Nothing new about that; baseball is almost always on in the clubhouse, and has been since the team began playing in 1998.
What’s different is the way the players are watching. Whereas in the past it was a passive event, with the occasional quiet comment if something interesting happened, today the players seemed actively involved in watching what was going on, even as they prepared to head out for their pregame workout. They seemed interested, particularly, in what Darrell Rasner was doing against the Tigers (he’s scheduled to pitch against Tampa Bay on Thursday). They just seem more into it this year, and a lot of the credit credit for that has to go to Troy Percival and Cliff Floyd.
(What was on the fourth TV? The Players Championship. Golf is also big in major-league clubhouses.)
Anyway, as you can tell from the above, not much going on in the way of news today. Floyd is back, Nathan Haynes is gone. Al Reyes and Gary Glover threw their scheduled bullpen sessions today and all went well. Reyes will pitch in extended spring on Monday and Glover will be evaluated tomorrow. It seems likely that if Glover is OK tomorrow, he’ll be activated (he’s eligible to come off the DL today).
Here are the lineups:
