Terriers, Ravens post state-ranked marks

Despite having to deal with some of the coldest conditions they’ve ever competed in, several Hillsborough County track and field athletes moved into the state’s top 20 rankings as a result of their performances in a five-way meet Wednesday night at Jefferson.

Hillsborough High senior Terrence Mitchell started things off by soaring 22 feet, 4 inches in the long jump. Although Mitchell jumped two feet farther last season and was the Class 3A state runner-up in the event, his mark Wednesday currently stands No. 10 in the state rankings for all classifications this season.

In the triple jump, another Terriers senior, Carlton Walton, produced a season best of 44-2 at Jefferson, good for No. 17 in the state. Coach Joe Sipp says he hopes to see Walton hit 48 or 49 feet later this season if he can improve on his middle phase of the triple jump.

Later, the Terriers foursome of Rodney Johnson, Walton, Jeremiah Green and Jordan Worlds teamed up to win the 4x100-meter relay in a season-best effort of 43.58, a fully electronic time that stands No. 13 in the state. Alonso was right behind Hillsborough in that race, finishing in 43.60, the 14th best mark in Florida this season. The Ravens relay team was Waymon Reed, John Thomas, Brandon Holloway and Franklin Mosely.

Alonso came back to close with meet by winning the 4x400 relay in 3:32.09, No. 11 in Florida. The Ravens foursome there was Diontrez Fantroy, Jordan Davis, Holloway and Mosely.

Hillsborough won the boys meet 171-155 over Class 2A Robinson. In the girls meet, Alonso knocked off Hillsborough 159-122.5.
