Several Hillsborough County football standouts took part in the Badger Sports 7-on-7 tournament at USF this past weekend as part of Team Tampa, a roster of players that included standouts from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando counties.
Josh Newberg of Elite Scouting Services was in attendance and provided a breakdown of some of the top performers from the team, which included a pair of Robinson Knights.
RB J.J. Hubbard (Robinson) - Played running back, but was most effective in the slot. He was virtually unguardable when matched up on a linebacker. Hubbard has a quick first step, great hands and top-end speed to run away from defenders after the catch.
CB Alex Dixon (Countryside) - One of the bigger corners at the tournament, Dixon was manhandling some of the top receivers in the state. He had an interception in every game except for one, showing why he’s considered the top corner in Tampa Bay.
DB Ruben Gonzalez (Robinson) - Although he’s featured at receiver for Robinson, Gonzalez excelled as a safety. He’s got a big frame, 6’2 and 185 pounds, and also has the speed to be able to take the deep play away from the opposing offense.
WR Chris Moore (Jefferson) - Even though teammate Andre Davis gets most of the media’s attention, Moore is quickly turning heads. Between his performance at the Under Armour Combine three weeks ago and last weekend’s 7-on-7, Moore’s stock is on the rise. He’s a quarterback’s dream—picking passes off his shoestrings and also going up over the top of defenders on a fade route, Moore can do it all.
Armwood RB Matt Jones and QB Josh Grady, St. Pete Catholic LB Dante Fowler and Jefferson QB Quentin Williams also had a good tournament, according to Newberg.
ESPN recruiting analyst J.C. Shurburtt had a couple stories from the event, and several locals were mentioned.
This one has a few tidbits on Jefferson’s Andre Davis, Alonso’s Anthony Chickillo, Plant’s James Wilder Jr. and Brooksville Nature Coast’s Ja’Juan Story among the event’s standouts. Davis and Story played for Team Tampa, while Wilder (along with Plant teammate Phillip Ely) played for Doom Squad and Chickillo played for Sarasota/Bradenton.
This story, which lists under-the-radar prospects, mentions Freedom’s Keith Lewis, Jefferson’s Moore, Plant’s Ely, St. Pete Catholic’s Fowler and Armwood’s Jones.
