Many consider Tampa Catholic senior quarterback D.J. Williams as a potential D-I player. But because he spent most of his prep career at TC playing behind nationally-recruited Christian Green, Williams, the son of former Bucs and Redskins star quarterback Doug Williams, didn’t get the playing time he likely would have had at another school.
As a result, Crusaders coach Bob Henriquez said Williams will play a year of prep school in the post-graduate program at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.
“I think that’s a good move for D.J.” Henriquez said. “He’s got such tremendous potential and just needs more time to develop.”
Williams, who is still only 17, has all the tools to put up big numbers as a quarterback. He’s 6-foot-2 and owns a strong arm. He’s shown poise in the pocket and good vision. At 175 pounds, he probably needs to put on a few pounds of muscle to reach the next level but no one doubts Williams can and will do just that. His height and athleticism could also allow him to play receiver, which he often did at TC.
The only issue is a lack of reps at the position. This fall, Williams got to throw the ball less than 50 times and it was a similar situation last year when he was a junior. Williams had an offer to play Division I-AA football at Alabama State and had received interest from his dad’s Alma mater, Grambling, as well as Morgan State.
