Tampa Catholic senior defensive back Jeremi Wilkes had made a verbal commitment to Syracuse University, Crusaders coach Bob Henriquez said Monday.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Wilkes has been one of the cornerstones of TC’s defense this season as the Crusaders head into Saturday’s Class 2B state title game against Jacksonville Bolles. Prior to TC’s state semifinals win against Hollywood Chaminade, Wilkes had recorded 27 solo tackles and three interceptions.
Wilkes has also seen duty on kickoff returns and ran one back 75 yards for a touchdown earlier this season against Mulberry.
Other schools who were recruiting Wilkes included Florida State, Georgia Southern, Iowa, Louisville, Rutgers, Troy and Western Kentucky.
