Tampa Catholic junior Hunter Joyer eclipsed his school’s 17-year-old record in the shot put Thursday afternoon with a lifetime best mark of 55 feet, 1 inch at the Northside Christian Invitational in St. Petersburg.
The record Joyer surpassed was held by none other than Crusaders football coach Bob Henriquez, who in 1982 recorded a throw of 54-11.5.
“I knew Hunter would do it eventually,” Henriquez said by telephone from Tallahassee, where he is on business. “He’s so strong and explosive. It was only a matter of time before he got my record. I’m honored that it was taken by such an outstanding young man.”
Just before his record throw – which, of course, won the event—Joyer broke his own personal record with a heave of 52-4. He started off the meet by taking the discus with a toss of 133-0.
During football season, the 6-foot, 238-pound Joyer plays fullback and linebacker for TC. He already has scholarship offers from Stanford University and Louisville, where his brother, Kamran, is an offensive lineman.
