TC scrimmages; two QBs leave squad

Despite some early morning showers that soaked their field, the Tampa Catholic Crusaders staged their first scrimmage of fall Saturday.

Under the direction of senior quarterback Conner Louis and freshman Chivarsky Corbett, the offense scored three times. As usual, Henriquez said he was impressed with the play of fullback Hunter Joyer, a University of Florida commitment. But Henriquez said he was also pleased with the performance of newcomer running back Trevor Register, a transfer from Riverview, and freshman wide receiver Michael Clark.

“It was a little tough to get a good look at everyone in those (wet) conditions but overall, we did some good things,” Henriquez said. “We’ll need to look at film to see where we need work and improvement.”

The one bit of bad news Henriquez announced Saturday was the loss of junior quarterbacks Derek Martin and Luke Helms. Henriquez said both players told him they were leaving the squad because it didn’t appear they were going to be the starting quarterback this fall.

Martin is a member of the TC baseball team and Helms was at Alonso last season, where he was the backup to Guy Toph Award winner C.J. Bennett. He, too, plays baseball.

In other Crusaders news Saturday, Henriquez put the school’s new helmet logo on public display for the first time. The new logo has done away with the knight on horseback and replaced it with a retro-looking “TC” script. See the photo here of Louis sporting the new helmet design. Henriquez said the team will also sport a new-look uniform this fall.

TC opens the 2010 campaign Friday at 7:30 p.m. with a preseason game against Pinellas County’s Boca Ciega High, a Class 4A squad.
