A week after Wharton’s Xavier Fisher was lost for the season after sustaining a broken neck in the Wildcats loss to Armwood, Tampa Bay Tech had its own scare.

Titans junior defensive back Derrick McCray was carted off the field and taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in the first half of Tech’s game against Alonso Friday night. McCray suffered a neck injury during a kickoff return.
Tech coach C.C. Culpepper said McCray has been released from the hospital with a neck jam.
“There’s no permanent damage,” Culpepper said. “It was a scary moment. I had kids crying, but he’s going to be OK. He’ll be day-to-day and we’ll know about midweek whether he can play this week or not.”

I was at the game when the injury occurred. My kid has played football since he was 9 years old and as a mom there is not a day he puts on the pads that I don’t appreciate that such a thing could happen. All the best for McCray’s swift recovery.
