Tampa United, a recently formed 18-U club volleyball team, was the only team from Tampa (four qualified) to take home a medal at the 2008 USA Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships in Dallas last week. United went 7-3 to tie for third and win the bronze medal.
But guess who was on the team? From the two-time defending Class 5A title Plant squad, setter and incoming Duke freshman Kellie Catanach (Tribune Volleyball Player of the Year) and rising senior Danielle Erb; former Academy of the Holy Names hitters Maureen Colligan (Colgate) and Hillary Hunt (Mississippi State) and eventual Florida walk-on and former Gaither libero Elissa Hausmann.
The Tampa Bay Juniors 16-under Black team, which includes rising juniors Maddie Martin (Plant) and Lindsay Young (Berkeley Prep), finished fifth in the 16 Open Division with a record of 6-2. The 17U National team went 6-3 to finish 13th while the 15U team went 2-9 to place 22nd.

I understand the girls you mentioned in this article are from the Tampa area...BUT...you did not mention the entire team and I believe the entire team won the medal. Please do your homework! You left out some great volleyball players who also have State Championship rings!

do not attempt to lesser this achievement for these girls - they worked hard and won the medal. We should be happy that they represented the bay area and their club so well.

Nick, although you may be correct in saying that the Tampa United 18u team was the only team from Tampa to bring home a medal from Junior Olympics, it is a little misleading when you consider that they were competing in the national division, not the open division. There were 28 teams ahead of Tampa United 18’s who qualified to compete in the open division, all of which technically finished ahead of them overall.
Tampa Bay Juniors 16 Black team finished tied for 5th place in the open division. Although they did not medal, they did finish 5th overall as opposed to 31st overall.
Congratulations to all the Tampa teams who made it to JO’s, in any division. A lot of hard work and determination goes into an achievement like that.

When Tampa Bay Juniors 15 Black won the National Division last year, I don’t remember anyone saying “awesome, we placed 29th!” Check out the Juniors website and see if 29th place is mentioned anywhere. Let’s have a little consistency and celebrate every team from Tampa that medals at JOs.
