Tampa Prep will host the 11th annual City of Tampa Championship basketball tournament this weekend at the Walter Athletic Complex on the school’s campus. The three-day, eight-team tournament begins Thursday at 3:30 p.m. as Kissimmee Life Christian Academy takes on Tampa Catholic.
The Terrapins, winners of the tournament in 2011, open up play against Blake Thursday evening at 8 p.m., while Sarasota Cardinal Mooney will face Plant (5 p.m.) and Robinson will face Chamberlain (6:30 p.m.) in the other two opening round matchups.
The winner of tournament’s final, which will be Saturday at 8 p.m., will take home the Mayor’s Cup and an individual player will win the Winston C. Davis Most Valuable Player trophy, an award named in honor of the longtime Hillsborough County High School basketball coach who passed away in August after a two-year battle with brain cancer.
In last season’s final Tampa Prep defeated Tampa Catholic 60-46 as the Terrapins went on to a 31-1 season winning the Class 3A state title.
