Following a rousing speech from motivational speaker Dr. Kevin Elko, the Tampa Catholic defense put on a strong display en route to a 17-13 win over the offense in Friday’s intersquad scrimmage at Crusaders Stadium.
Head coach Bob Henriquez said he was particularly impressed with his defensive line, which he described as “very active” in the scrimmage. Singling out senior linemen Taylor Timmons and Ed Buckner, linebacker Alec Maughan and defensive back Tyree Holder, Henriquez said the defensive unit shows a lot more speed than last season and has a good grasp on the defensive scheme the coaching staff is trying to install.
Offensively, Henriquez said he used the scrimmage to get a good look at his newest quarterback, Chamberlain transfer Mitchell Norden. Sophomore Chivarsy Corbett was the starter in the scrimmage and showed the poise he has learned after earning the starting job as a freshman last season. Henriquez said Norden is picking up the offense well and running backs Jordan Rich-Rogers and Trevor Register both had long runs from scrimmage.
Another standout on offense, Henriquez said, was new offensive lineman Dominic Bourne, who transferred from Wharton. A junior, Henriquez said Bourne should be “a big addition” to the squad this fall.
