The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could make history if it decided to draft Tennessee safety Eric Berry in next month’s NFL Draft.
That could be good or bad.
There is a belief Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy will be gone before Tampa Bay selects at No.3 overall. Many experts project Tampa Bay would select Berry, but that would be somewhat historic.
During the last 18 years, no safety has been selected in the top three. The last safety drafted within the top three was Eric Turner, who was the No.2 overall selection by Cleveland in 1991.
When it comes to safeties, only four others have been top 10 picks since 1991.
Laron Landry, Redskins – #6 overall (2007)
Michael Huff, Raiders – #7 overall (2006)
Sean Taylor, Redskins – #5 overall (2004)
Roy Williams, Cowboys – #8 overall (2002)
While Berry is being compared to Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu and Baltimore’s Ed Reed, neither were top 10 selections. Polamalu (USC) was the 16th overall selection by Pittsburgh in 2003 and Reed (Miami) was 24th by Baltimore in 2002.
If the Bucs select Berry No.3 overall, they better believe he is going to be one of the best safeties in history.
