Let me start off by saying that in my mind, there is no such thing as a “bad” Allen & Ginter design.
Since Topps debuted the tobacco-style baseball card set in 2006, there have been some very good designs. The 2011 A&G was probably one of the more flowery sets, but again, not bad. But what I’ve seen of the 2012 Allen & Ginter design is more traditional, and I like that.
Topps has released a photo of the 2012 design, using Hank Aaron as its prototype. The lines that run up and down the sides of the card are simple, and I like the player’s name boldly displayed beneath the photo. And it might be an optical illusion, but it looks like there is more photo on the card for the 2012 set. The feathered background has been an A&G staple, and it still looks great.
Since I am a big fan of retro designs, I think this format will work well.
