Bucs Report
Talib All Smiles In Tampa

Aqib Talib explained his name was Muslim and meant “The Last To Come” when asked about its origins during his first press conference as a Buccaneer this morning.

When he posed for pictures with Tampa Bay’s Jon Gruden, the coach joked “That name means good corner, I hope.”

Tampa Bay has high hopes for Talib after selecting him 20th overall (1st round) in the NFL Draft. Talib is the player expected to eventually replace Tampa Bay Pro Bowl cornerback Ronde Barber after he retires.

Talib is the highest cornerback ever selected by Tampa Bay. He also is only the second defensive back Tampa Bay has ever drafted in the first round.

“I’m so excited to be a Buccaneer,” Talib said. “I thank coach [Gruden] for taking me and Mr. [Bruce] Allen for taking me. It’s just wonderful, a dream come true for me, an honor to be able to start my NFL career with this team, with this defense. Having a chance to be around Ronde Barber, Derrick Brooks, guys like that. It’s an honor for me.”

Although Talib might be Barber’s heir apparent, he planned to stay silent in Tampa Bay’s meeting rooms and learn from the All-Pro cornerback.

“I watch football, pay attention to all the corners in the league and Ronde Barber is one that I pay attention to,” Talib said. “His name comes up when my friends and me start talking about the best corners in the league.”

Talib arrived in Tampa Sunday night around 11 after being delayed in Texas. Bucs defensive back coach Raheem Morris picked Talib up from Tampa International Airport last night before taking him to his hotel room.

After a brief rest, Talib was all smiles during while speaking to the Tampa Bay media. He even played receiver at Kansas and joked about playing both ways here.

“It’s been all smiles for me,” Talib said. “I don’t need sleep. I don’t need nothing. It’s just a dream come true for me. I don’t want to wake up.”

Talib (6-foot-1 and 205 pounds) ranks second in Kansas history with 13 career interceptions and first in school history with 322 yards via interception returns. In 34 career games, Talib recorded 162 tackles, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and 43 passes defensed. He also caught nine passes for 224 yards and five touchdowns as a receiver.

Now “The Last To Come” is ready to reward Tampa Bay for chosing him first.

“We played kind of a Tampa 2 [defense], a form of the Tampa 2 in Kansas, so I got experience playing Cover 2,” Talib said. “I know that’s the base coverage here, so I think it will be all right. I think it’s a great situation for me.”

Well said RON BOWLES I agree with everything you said. From begining to end.

For the record, Derrick Brooks is the most dominant LB of his generation.  Class act all the way.  If you need a refresher course, just watch the 1993 National Championship game against Nebraska.  Geno has the same East/West speed, same size, same ability to go South in the passing game.  With those skills, he can be a VERY GOOD LB with the Bucs.  Grading a guy on one game is shortsighted.  And though I hate to admit it, Tebow will PROBABLY win 2 Heismans.  Again, I HATE UF with a passion, but give credit where credit is due.  Just don’t rely on Moody to help the Gators win another BCS championship.  There is a reason he was fourth on the depth chart at USC.

I was on my edge of my seat when I thought Tampa Bay was going to get Mike Jenkins out of South Fla. I wish Tampa Bay would have called Cowboys after Tampa selected Him. They swap players and Tampa would have picked up a nice additional 2 picks. Then We could have picked up a prize LB with that Dallas pick in the 2 or 3.

Hey Feesh,
Derrick Brooks will have the Title of
LB of all time. Derrick is the Man. Derrick is going to groom this kid Geno Hayes in becoming a great LB for us in the future. “Little Derrick"is a good nickname for him.No one is expecting him to be the best LB of all times. Thats Derricks spot.

Posted by  Feesh, Lakeland on 04/28  at  09:32 PM

I never said Geno had “no chance” to succeed.  I found it funny that Buc “fans” were already drawing comparisons of a 6th round pick to Derrick Brooks.  I also never said you were making the comparison.

And I don’t believe Tebow will win a second Heisman.  Because he has so much talent around him this year, I don’t believe he’ll put up the amazing stats he did last year.

My main point was that people love to complain about draft picks just to complain.  I think it’s amusing.

Posted by  Ron Bowles, Cape Coral, FL on 04/28  at  09:08 PM

Name a LB who Tim Tebow DIDN’T own? You’re talking about the first guy who will probably win 2 Heismans.NOBODY,(and by the way, I HATE UF)but NOBODY is going to have success against Tebow. The UF game is NOT a good indicator of what a player like Hayes can do.Hayes has good instincts against the run, gets deep quickly against the pass, goes east and west as well as anybody, and has soft hands.Given that he will play weakside LB, and he has both Derrick Brooks and Cato June to learn from, he can be a solid LB in the NFL.  CAN BE, not WILL BE.All I am saying is that to give a guy with the skill sets I have mentioned above NO CHANCE to succeed is a bit premature.

Posted by  Feesh, Lakeland on 04/28  at  08:51 PM

Maybe Geno’s average play at the school out west is due to the poor coaching staff and teammates.

Tebow owned Geno big time!  I don’t think that’s a game he’ll ever forget...and he shouldn’t.

Posted by  Ron Bowles, Cape Coral, FL on 04/28  at  08:31 PM

I’m not crowning Geno the next DB, I just think that the Bucs are a team that could bring the best out of his ability.  This is a guy who was the best of the bunch on the Seminoles LB corp that was rated VERY high during the college season.  He upstaged Timmons and Davis in the Emerald Bowl against UCLA, and had a very solid year past.  If there is a team and a player that can have the most positive impact on this kid, the Bucs and DB are the team to do it.

Posted by  Feesh, Lakeland on 04/28  at  08:23 PM

I think people were being hasty making comparisons of Geno to Derrick Brooks before he’s ever played a snap.  I understand that he’s a LB from FSU and he wore #10.  I’ve never been impressed with Geno and I’m not expecting him to be the greatest LB of all time.  I just want him to contribute on special teams and stay out of trouble.

This is similar to people automatically pegging white safeties as the next John Lynch.

I trust that these people in the organization who get paid to do the scouting and make the decisions know what they’re doing.  I feel they did the best that they could based on the limited draft picks.

Not everyone can have the million picks that the Chiefs had.

Posted by  Ron Bowles, Cape Coral, FL on 04/28  at  08:03 PM

Let’s not be too hasty with predictions for Geno Hayes.  He ran his mouth before the Florida game to try and give the Seminoles some confidence.  This is a guy whos motor never stops.  He is also clutch, (see the INT for a TD that ruined BC perfect season).  He has decent size, and will be surrounded by great talent at LB with the BUCS.  The Talib pickup looks good, but the Jackson pick may be the best of the bunch.

MAN!!!! I can’t wait for pre-season.

Posted by  Michael Lindsey,  on 04/28  at  06:18 PM

I’m a KU season ticket holder and the Bucs have drafted a really fine athlete in Talib as I have seen him play and can attest to his abilities.

Posted by  Budster, Archdale, nc on 04/28  at  06:11 PM

Why is it that every sports board you go on these days is half trash talk? There is no relief. We talk bad about how a guy talks or what he did when he was eighteen. I was in college. What dumb things did you do when you were 19? What ever you do don’t mis-spell a word or use the wrong grammar, you will be next to feel the wrath.

I appreciate all the good posts here, and on other boards we Buc fans must go to every day to see if we missed any news. I’m exited about our draft pics. Even if it was a bad draft for us, I’d still be exited because I love the game.

Posted by  Lou Campo, largo, FL on 04/28  at  05:40 PM

Hey folks, lets just get back to the football blog and stop all the grammer crap. NO one on here is that perfect that they need to be correcting anyone else, for god’s sake its just a football blog.

Posted by  Feesh, Lakeland on 04/28  at  05:30 PM

We shouldn’t have passed on Hester years ago when we had the chance.  We’ve never drafted anyone to specifically address the PR and KR needs, yet now people complain that we did.

People complain that we didn’t draft Jenkins, most likely cause he’s from USF.  Yet, from his play on the field, Talib is the better corner for our system.

And Geno Hayes will never be Derrick Brooks.  Hopefully he’ll learn not to run his mouth so much and let his actions on the field speak for himself.  A guy up in Gainesville named Tim Tebow made Geno look foolish after Geno spent all week running his mouth.  I hope our leaders on defense can help him out as he’ll need it.

Posted by  Robert Hertig, Bradenton, Fl on 04/28  at  04:57 PM

Hey epbuc16 if you want to be a jerk putting down someone’s grammar because they used to instead of too you should correct your own. A persons’ name starts with a capital letter thus it would be Hank not hank.
Treat people with the same respect you expect to bee treated with.

I really like the Dexter Jackson pickup.  One thing for those who are knocking down this guy because he came from a small school.  Micheal Strahan came from TSU and Good old may he rest in peace Walter Payton came from Jackson State, and Jerry Rice came from Miss. Valley State.  All are small schools.  Hey Dexter, this guy is pulling for you.

Posted by  Dan Shreve, Titusville, FL. on 04/28  at  03:49 PM

This kid is like a Asunta Samuals type player VERY GOOD except Talib ran a 4.43 at the combine and I do believe Samuals ran it 4.54. Where did Samuals come from? UCF a school also that didn’t supposelly play in the top ranks
of NCAA. Looks like he turned out to be great player. Great pick up Bucs!!
I can’t wait untill football starts!!!
“GO BUCS”

Posted by  epbuc16,  on 04/28  at  03:36 PM

Hey james jones its “too funny” not “to funny” learn how to speak before you go running your mouth. And hank you’re a just an idiot.

Posted by  Dan Shreve, Titusville, FL. on 04/28  at  03:08 PM

Way to go BUCS!!!!!! Great draft choice in Talib. This guy is going to be a star. Geno Hayes is going to be a
great fit in the LB core or should I say “Little Derrick.” WR Dexter Jackson
will be a great addition at KR and WR.
Thats the kind of player that you need on your team. Let me ask everybody: What kind of player did Devon Hester turn out to be? This kid Jackson could possibly be another Devon Hester. Would you pass Hester up? Give him a chance.  Nice draft Bucs!!!!
What we need now is get a deal done for Jason Taylor: Simms,Clayton 3rd round next year. Then SB at home.

Posted by  stretchcaddy, tampa on 04/28  at  02:44 PM

Who cares if the kid cant speak as well as some people or if he never had to give a speech or even say umm every four words, the kid can play football and thats why we drafted him. We did not draft him to become head of public relations or the spoke person of the NFL. He is still a young kid, jeez. Give him a break.

Overall good draft, i have faith in the FO and their picks.........I really think dre moore is going to be a beast and i think Josh Johnson might be a steal 2 or 3 years from now

Posted by  CLD, Holiday on 04/28  at  02:35 PM

We all need to give the kid a break.  So what, he had some problems with weed.  Big deal!  That was over 2 years ago anyway and besides no one is perfect.

All of the folks putting him down now will be the first to jump on the bandwagon when this kid shines.  You’ll see!

Posted by  kyle fountain, kansas on 04/28  at  02:20 PM

I am thrilled we landed Talib at 20. Warren Sapp had the same concerns coming out in 95. Look how bad that turned out. I’m Excited to see Dexter Jackson on Return and Reciever roles.Great to see them going for O-line strength in Round 3 as well.

Go Bucs, Kool Aid tastes great so far.....
