Aqib Talib explained his name was Muslim and meant “The Last To Come” when asked about its origins during his first press conference as a Buccaneer this morning.
When he posed for pictures with Tampa Bay’s Jon Gruden, the coach joked “That name means good corner, I hope.”
Tampa Bay has high hopes for Talib after selecting him 20th overall (1st round) in the NFL Draft. Talib is the player expected to eventually replace Tampa Bay Pro Bowl cornerback Ronde Barber after he retires.
Talib is the highest cornerback ever selected by Tampa Bay. He also is only the second defensive back Tampa Bay has ever drafted in the first round.
“I’m so excited to be a Buccaneer,” Talib said. “I thank coach [Gruden] for taking me and Mr. [Bruce] Allen for taking me. It’s just wonderful, a dream come true for me, an honor to be able to start my NFL career with this team, with this defense. Having a chance to be around Ronde Barber, Derrick Brooks, guys like that. It’s an honor for me.”
Although Talib might be Barber’s heir apparent, he planned to stay silent in Tampa Bay’s meeting rooms and learn from the All-Pro cornerback.
“I watch football, pay attention to all the corners in the league and Ronde Barber is one that I pay attention to,” Talib said. “His name comes up when my friends and me start talking about the best corners in the league.”
Talib arrived in Tampa Sunday night around 11 after being delayed in Texas. Bucs defensive back coach Raheem Morris picked Talib up from Tampa International Airport last night before taking him to his hotel room.
After a brief rest, Talib was all smiles during while speaking to the Tampa Bay media. He even played receiver at Kansas and joked about playing both ways here.
“It’s been all smiles for me,” Talib said. “I don’t need sleep. I don’t need nothing. It’s just a dream come true for me. I don’t want to wake up.”
Talib (6-foot-1 and 205 pounds) ranks second in Kansas history with 13 career interceptions and first in school history with 322 yards via interception returns. In 34 career games, Talib recorded 162 tackles, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and 43 passes defensed. He also caught nine passes for 224 yards and five touchdowns as a receiver.
Now “The Last To Come” is ready to reward Tampa Bay for chosing him first.
“We played kind of a Tampa 2 [defense], a form of the Tampa 2 in Kansas, so I got experience playing Cover 2,” Talib said. “I know that’s the base coverage here, so I think it will be all right. I think it’s a great situation for me.”

Bucs just signed QB SAM KELLER rookie from Nebraska. What does everybody think of this kid????

Cornelius Ingram isn’t proven as a weapon? If you say so.
Who’s gonna be the MAN for the Noles? Please, tell me. Our 4th string players would start for the school out west. Your beloved team would gladly take any of the 5 RBs I mentioned. And sorry man...it’s just gonna be as bad as last year.

#1. Geno will make the team is my prediction, because Monte will see in him the ABILITY to be a GOOD LB in this system. Don’t be surprised if the tutoring from Derrick and Co. make a big difference in him both on and off the field. #2. The people you are touting for UF HAVE NOT PRODUCED YET. I am saying YET, as anything can happen, but until I see it on the field, I will not give a Gator the benefit of the doubt. I am a NOLES fan, after all. TT and PH are the only two PROVEN commodities UF has, so until I see one of the underclassmen pick it up, I expect more of the same thing from Urban and the Gators. The fact that there are five RB’s in the mix tells me that NONE OF THEM ARE READY TO BE THE MAN.

I don’t think Geno will make the team...that’s my opinion.

Princess,whats that suppose to mean?
That Geno’s carrear is over because of it?

I don’t think Geno has tackle Tebow yet

He has a history of smoking some weed and sounds like he is unaccustomed to public speaking. Sounds like you’re referring to the President.
Posted by Dan, Titusville, FL. on 04/29 at 10:04 PM
Feesh,
Sorry about bursting you bubble on that. I’m a Noles fan all the way.I’m suppose to do stuff like that. And also, you are right there is a football problem in Tally, They have a QB problem. Poor Scouting at QB.
Posted by Feesh, Lakeland on 04/29 at 09:20 PM
Moving on...I’m so glad Tally girls can drink more. That’s very fascinating. It’s honestly way too easy to throw this back at you, but I won’t.
Check Tebow’s stats from last year and watch a few of his games and then come back and say that he can’t throw the ball. Jealous? I think so.
And there is definitely is a football problem in Tally...a BIG one! 45-12. Still hurt?

I believe we can talk about anything we’d like to here and Ron and I were the only two having a friendly debate. We understood that the Gator talk should be discussed elsewhere, but I guess you’ll have to deal with it.
But as you resort to cursing and saying who sucks, you honestly don’t even deserve to be responded to.

We are suppose to be talking about Tampa Bay Bucs here!!!!! Quit talking about the sorry ass F..ing Gators here.
“GATORS SUCK” GO BUCS!!!
Posted by dylan, tally/land o lakes on 04/29 at 08:13 PM
all i can say is this is supposed to be about the bucs and another point is i dont know if youve been to tallahassee or gainesville latly but the girls in tally are way hotter and party way harder than the girls in g-ville hints why tallahassee is a drinking town with a football problem go noles and when tebow gets hurt and theres no one to throw i mean run the option where the gators gonna be stuck in the thick mud of a florida swamp

You’ll see it in the fall and for years to come as UF continues to dominate the school out west.
Moody won the Pac-10 freshman of the year and led USC in rushing, but I’m not crowning him the next great Gator RB. I’ll wait until fall to see how it plays out. There’s more talent at RB than the Gators have probably ever have.
Posted by Ron Bowles, Cape Coral, FL on 04/29 at 06:09 PM
Feesh, when your QB (Tebow), and WR (Harvin) score 50% of the rushing TD’s, and at least 60% of your total rushing yards, who are you asking to make the leap? UF will be good this year, but Moody is supposed to provide the stability at RB that this team’s system has missed. That’s not my opinion, but that of the writers at ESPN. What I AM saying is that depending on a transfer RB is an iffy proposition at best, and will determine which of us is correct. If UF doesn’t find a rushing attack in the SEC, it will be up to T.T. and P.H. to carry the team AGAIN. Like last year. I know you remember.
Posted by Feesh, Lakeland on 04/29 at 04:58 PM
I wouldn’t judge what the Gator offense will look like to one spring game where top-tiered players were rested.
If so-called ESPN “experts” are predicting this to be a 40-plus point averaging offense this season, I guess I’m not the only one who thinks the offense will be far more explosive than last year.
But then again, they already put up 45 points on the school out west last year, didn’t they?
Posted by Feesh, Lakeland on 04/29 at 04:54 PM
A better receiving core including a healthy Percy Harvin, Cornelius Ingram, Louis Murphy, Deonte Thompson, Riley Cooper, and others who will contribute.
Five deep at the RB position with flexibility to put players in multiple positions (Moore, Williams, Rainey, Moody, B. James)
It’s also known that Meyer would like to rotate QBs, just as he did for Tebow’s freshman year.
It’s a bad time to be someone who “hates UF”. Then again, they’ve owned the school out west for some time now.

Freesh, if you watched Geno for more than one game, you saw what I saw. The kid CAN BE a GOOD LB. My point is that with the people teaching him, and the skills he has you could be more openminded about him. Second, you are saying (and I know this belongs on another board, but oh well) that Tebow has more talent around him now. Like who? Moody is the new impact player of whom even Urban has said “You better be good”. My point is that UF better be ready to watch the Tebow show win for them again, cause one mediocre RB is not the answer. Just watch the spring game. Or do you think some of the incoming freshmen will make that big of an impact? Will Urban and Co. let them even if they can?

talib was the top cb on every draft board, but was predicted to drop b/c of off field issues. guess what? that exactly what happened. so we got the best cb in the draft at 20 because the kid smoked some weed. why go after jenkins when you can get the best. i think the love for him is just because he played for a local college team. talin was the best best in the draft, hopefully it transitions to the nfl the same way

dudes geno was the beast of the noles deffense the year and will be an animal on the bucs and studying behind DB will only make him that much better
Posted by Feesh, Lakeland on 04/29 at 08:05 AM
And that should read Moody’s name, not Moody’s game.
Posted by Feesh, Lakeland on 04/29 at 08:04 AM
You continue to make assumptions as to what I’m saying. I watched Geno for more than just one game and I just don’t see what you see..just an opinion. So who’s grading him on one game?
And not once did I bring up Moody’s game as the reason that I don’t feel Tebow would win another Heisman. You’re making assumptions.
I also know Mr. Brooks is probably the greatest player in Bucs history..never said he wasn’t.
It is however enlightening to debate with someone who does make good points..kudos to you for that.

Honestly though, I don’t think his use of pot a couple of years ago is a big deal. I think Hank and I were just making light of it. I hope Talib does well for the Buc’s. epbuc16, relax dude.

epbuc16 aka Mr. Tough Guy! Sorry, I did not know leaving off an O was such a crime. I do know that smoking weed is a crime.

Wish this paper would post an article buying into the school out west hype that Geno is the next DB, but hopefully this story from rookie camp with entertain you here.
Today all of the draftees came in to sign paperwork. After completing the paper work the rookies were taken down to eat. In the dining room were some coaches and other staff as well as the rest of the rookies. So after Geno goes and gets some food and sits down, one of the coaches comes up to him, and lifts his (Geno’s) shirts up. Geno then proceeds to ask him what he’s doing, and the coach says, “Just checking to see if Tim Tebow’s footprint is still on your chest.”
