See this face?

This is the face of a man who knows he has the upper hand. Rumors have been running since the beginning of last season that Simeon Rice would not see the end of his contract in a Buccaneers uniform. The talk was that the team would trade Rice away for a draft pick and sign a high-profile free agent defensive end with a nice signing bonus that would save cap room right away (Rice has repeatedly declined to restructure his contract to lower his cap value.) The only problem is that the big name defensive ends are being franchised by their current teams. Dwight Freeney (Indianapolis), Justin Smith (Cincinnati) and Charles Grant (New Orleans) have all been hit with the franchise tag, virtually guaranteeing that they stay with their teams for at least one more year.
Without a stud defensive end on the market to replace him with, Rice is likely going to remain in Tampa through 2007 when his contract finally expires. There’s no one better than Rice that is reasonably available and the Bucs cannot afford to give up his talent to take a chance on a retread (you were kidding about the whole Andre Wadsworth thing, right, Jon?) If Bruce Allen is desperate to get rid of Rice, the only possible way I could see to do it is if the Bucs lose the coin toss tomorrow and take Gaines Adams (Clemson) with the fourth pick. If they did that and resigned Dewayne White, the Bucs could start White at right end and have Adams and Greg Spires compete for the left. The #4 pick for Adams isn’t such a reach since the Bucs probably won’t be considering a quarterback or a running back that high. Remember, all these franchised players also drives up Adams’s draft value.
Even still, though, the Bucs would be taking a chance on an unproven rookie instead of sticking with the known talent of Rice who can most likely bounce back from his off year in 2006. This season will be a “contract year” for Rice, who will undoubtedly step up his game to show off to the rest of the league in the hopes of landing one last big payday. And it would be nice if the Bucs were the beneficiaries of all that extra effort.

I’m not sure why you sound so sad, Scott. Simeon was one of the guys that brought a ring to Tampa…now hes the target of so much animosity. So he had 1 bad year. So he won’t restructure his deal [I wouldn’t either]. So he may step up his game simply b/c hes up on contract. Hes still one of the absolute best pass-rushers in the league. He’d been the most consistend sack-maker in the NFL for a 5 year period [until this year]...and Tampa has already been the beneficiary of his skills. Give Simeon a break…he deserves the respect warranted by his talent - which is a whole lot.

I think that the Bucs must trade Rice while they can still get “something” for him! 2 sacks in 8 games is not much for a “D” end! This year he will be another year older and another year slower! “Pay White”, He played better than Rice at the same position as Rice in 2006! It’s not what he has done for the team in the past, but what is he doing for the team now, “not much”! Something is better than nothing for Rice! Lets move on or 2007 will be another “Paper Bag Year”!

i agree with Mr. Golan, the last 5 years this man has put on a clinic on the field,he is a monster when he is on his A game, hes had one bad year,so what,if he contiues, sure let him go,but i wouldnt put to much on last year,he will rebound fine and he will get a contract extension before the end of next season, but i would resign dwayne white in a heartbeat,i love spires but white plays with more passion and he is younger also.

Who says I’m sad? I think he’s the best option for the upcoming year and I’m fine with that. However, I will also not be sad when he isn’t re-signed for 2008.

Thanks Mr. Dotson…at least somebody else has a memory that goes back further than 6 months. Simeon has EARNED the respect of the players and fans in Tampa. He definately deserves that respect from us too. If Simeon puts it back together and comes back strong then we should re-sign him. I don’t think that anybody can argue that hes one of the best pass-rushers in the league. And, just to point something out, hes gotten better at defending the run the past 2 years too. He was traditionally a 1-sided DE, now he’s showing great balance. KEEP SIMEON…

Am i the only one who watched this guy play in the last two years? He has quit on almost every play and doesn’t give a damb about Tampa. All he cares about is himself and his music, he is a quiter and he will quit on Tampa again. The Bucs would do much better to trade him for any draft pick or a vetran. Someone who cares about the team and not only himself.

Mr. Dwyer, I didn’t know you had a side-line pass. But that must be the case since you have such amazing first-hand knowledge of Simeon “giving up” on plays. There is no other way you could know that b/c nobody else seems to have noticed. Since you didn’t have that side-line pass then you’re clearly assuming things. Simeon has a “motor” that goes strong from whistle to whistle and hes productive troughout the game. He’s at his best when the game is on the line and has made big plays for the Bucs in the 4th quater throughout his time in Tampa.
Suggest removalThink before you speak. Stop quoting the catch-phrases the “experts” use on TV. And take a quick look at Simeon’s stats over the past 5 years. Then come back and repost an apology.

Mr. Wilson you are wrong! That was NOT Tony’s team that won the Super Bowl. That was Jon Gruden’s offense and Tony/Monte’s defense! 28 of the 53 players were new to the team! There were about 5 new starters on offense that weren’t even on the roster when Tony was there! What Gruden did was astounding, bringing in a new offense (and one as complicated as his is) and winning the Super Bowl is unprecedented! Give him credit where credit is due!
Suggest removalTony was a great coach and I am also sorry he is gone, but let’s be fair to Gruden too.
