Lightning captain Tim Taylor had his consultation with an orthopedic surgeon earlier this week and is set to undergo hip resurfacing surgery on Sept. 6. It is a very extensive procedure with basically pops the hip joint out of place and resurfaces the bone that connects the leg to the hip, but it certainly is better than the alternative which is a hip replacement.
Taylor had hoped to continue cortisone shots to get through the season, but realized as the summer went on that he was going to have to have the surgery, which is similar to the same thing Floyd Landis went through. Now Taylor, who will do all of his rehabilitation in Tampa, hopes to become the first player to undergo the hip resurfacing and return to a contact sport. Had he needed the hip replacement surgery his career would certainly be over. Now he has a slightly better chance to return.
With Taylor remaining in Tampa during his recovery, he will remain as team captain and likely will be visible around the locker room this season.
For a bit more on the procedure, check out this link from Bay News 9, although the video is no longer available. It also has a link to the doctor who will do the actual procedure.
