Boxing fans, Showtime’s Super Six World Boxing Classic kicks back up tonight when Andre Ward and Allan Green square off inside Oracle Arena in Oakland.
Ward, a San Francisco native, will be defending his recently-earned WBA super middleweight belt he collected after beating Mikkel Kessler in November via an 11th-round technical decision. A cut above Kessler’s right eye caused a halt to the bout at the 1:42 mark of the 11th round, and because Ward (21-0, 13 KOs) was ahead on the scorecards, he got the victory.
Meanwhile this is the first fight for Green (21-1, 20 KOs) in the Super Six tournament after replacing Jermain Taylor. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native starts the tournament in last place having zero points, while the other fighters in the tournament (Arthur Abraham, Andre Dirrell, Carl Froch, Kessler and Ward) have already fought twice.
Taylor removed himself from the tournament after suffering a devastating knockout loss to Abraham in his opening fight of the tournament. It was the fourth loss for Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs) in five bouts. It was also his second-consecutive knockout loss in a six month span.
Tonight’s fight airs live on Showtime at 10 p.m.
