Steven Stamkos scores - twice

According to the Lightning Insider on the team’s web site, Steven Stamkos notched a pair of goals and added three assists during Thursday night’s final scrimmage game, a 7-5 victory by Stamkos’ Team A, at the team’s prospect camp taking place in Victoria, British Columbia. But bragging rights went to Team B - coached by Len Barrie - after Justin Courtnall scored in the eighth round of a shootout to decide the winner.

Thursday was the final round of scrimmages, although there are more practice sessions remaining before the camp breaks up. The next organized team activity will be the rookie camp in Travese City, Mich., in September, which normally takes place the weekend before the start of training camp.

The Insider also posted a nice description of Len Barrie’s house, complete with a movie theatre and basketball court. There’s also a nice description of a “hike’’ along one of the trails in Victoria. A good read (and includes a photo of some of the group that participated)

And a thought just popped into my head as I was on the team web site finding the links for the Insider. There is a banner ad at the top of the page pushing the sale of a Gary Roberts jersey with No. 10 on the back. Now, I know Roberts has worn that number for the Penguins and Panthers. He wore No. 7 while with the Leafs but did wear No. 10 with Carolina and Calgary. And with his years of experience, he certainly deserves the right to choose his own number.

But my question is, does this mean Jussi Jokinen’s days are numbered? (yes, pun intended tongue wink
I know I’ve speculated that with the influx of new forwards that Jokinen and Michel Ouellet (along with Jason Ward) are probably the top three targets to be moved. But is this a clear message that Jokinen is at the top of the list?

If I’m Brian Lawton, I’m looking to move Jokinene first as he has the highest value because of his speed and open ice ability but little jam. Ward is obviously not in the picture, but will not bring nuch back in return. Craig is a great commodity because he can play the PK and the PP and can score, but could be packaged with Jokinen for a top 2 defenseman. Tarnasky, while he gives his all every shift, is a poor skater and as such limits the 4th lines ability to match up with anything but the 3rd or 4th line of the opposing team. Look for the Bolts to keep Ouellet for secondary scoring and to deal him at the trade deadline with picks for a top 2 defenseman if they’re in the hunt.

EE and others. I am unconcerned as to who wears # 10. I am not look for a conspiracy either. The only thing of importance is getting a damn good defenceman. We really need some quality in the back. As so many of you have expressed, the team can’t put the burden all on the goalie to keep other teams from scoring. Let’s get some solid help. Does anyone disagree?

I think that if Ouellet, Jokinen, Ward, or any combination of the three can bring us a quality defensive leader we should make the trade.  Having Ouellet sit on the bench as a “motivated” winger in reserve won’t keep him motivated for very long.

Justin, while I do realize that there are three No. 10s listed on the Lightning roster, only Roberts is being advertised as a jersey to sell on the banner ad at the top of the Tampa Bay home page. And that’s sort of my point, if Roberts’ jersey is being sold as a No. 10 on the back, where does that leave Jokinen, who wore 10 at the end of last season? I supposed he could go back to No. 36, which he wore in Dallas, now that Andre Roy is gone, but it’s something worth pondering.

I agree, jettison “Jussi” and Ward, but Ouellet had a signifigant rebirth after Brad was traded and I think he needs a chance at training camp to put up or shut up! I hope Roberts and Recchi have enough in the tank, but keeping a motivated winger in the “wings” might not be a bad card to hold. Also we are unsure about when Halpern will return and at what level he will perform. I think a motivated Ouellet could be a 20 goal scorer in the right line combination. Brad was too quick and had so much vision and anticipation that he played above Ouellet. A smart coach will place him in the “right” situation and he will be an asset.

EE if you look at the roster we have 3 #10’s, and 2 #24’s.
