Here’s the release from the American Hockey League, and a statement from Lightning general manager Brian Lawton:
The American Hockey League’s Board of Governors has unanimously voted to uphold the League suspension levied against Norfolk Admirals right wing Steve Downie last week. The Board convened via conference call this afternoon to hear the Admirals’ appeal.
Downie was suspended for twenty (20) games on Mar. 5 under the provisions of AHL Rule 41.2 for deliberately striking an official with his stick during a Feb. 28 game at Hershey.
The Board determined that the application of AHL Rule 41.2 was appropriate. That rule reads:
Any player or goalkeeper who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, “intent to injure” shall mean any physical force which a player or goalkeeper knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.)
In addition, the Board of Governors found that the League’s investigation was comprehensive, and that the disciplinary process was conducted in full compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the American Hockey League and its players, as well as with the provisions set forth in the League’s Constitution, By-Laws and Regulations.
Downie remains eligible to return to the Norfolk lineup on Apr. 11.
Statement from Lawton:
“Although we disagree with Steve Downie’s original suspension and the denial of his appeal, we accept and respect the decisions of the American Hockey League,” Lawton said. “Additionally, we thank the Board of Governors for hearing the appeal and giving the player a voice in the proceedings. Where Steve is concerned, we think he is a player with a bright future and a quality person. We look forward to his remaining a part of the Lightning organization and developing into a consistent NHL player.’’

Total BS explanation. Suspend him for 20 games for being an idiot not for intentionally trying to injure an official because that’s not what happened.

At first I liked Downie but a quick search on youtube will fine plenty of instances where he has done some pretty stupid things. For instance his CHEAP hit on Dean McAmmond. I feel the league has no place for someone who is going to play the game like this. I am all for playing a tough physical game, but this is childish and stupid. I say send him on his way out of Norfolk and Tampa.

Ryan, I don’t disagree with you but he wasn’t suspended for previous transgressions. He was suspended for a deliberate use of force with the intent to injure an official. The video I saw shows nothing of the sort. So again, if they are taking his previous issues into account or they are trying to hold him accountable for his recklessness during this particular instance, say so! Unfortunately, that’s not what they are saying and that is what makes this suspension crap.

Well I guess that means Downie is history in Tampa. Too bad, if he gets his act together he is a gritty, hockey smart player.

another way the bolts organization get ripped off by the officials.Downie has potential, if the refs ever leave him alone.

Suggest removalThe only way I can see us going after Tavares is if Vinny gets traded (still not out of the picture yet). Might be interesting though to see tavares and stamkos with st louis. That would be a interesting, just wish Vinny4 Played like he used too with some enthusiasm, hes been like this the whole year
