ST. PETERSBURG - Rays owner Stuart Sternberg, in town for tonight’s game against the Red Sox, said the Rays can be buyers at the trade deadline.
“Our eye is really about making the postseason,” he said.
Here is more of what he said ...
On the team’s payroll?
“We’re well beyond stretched. This for me, personally, is a very special year. It’s a special team, can be a special team, and we’re going to do whatever we can and whatever is necessary to try to give us the best opportunity to win this year.”
Can they take on payroll this summer?
“Yeah.”
How much more can they take on?
“I normally say in for a penny in for a pound. In this case in for $20, $25 million, in for some more.”
Can they make a significant addition?
“By any means necessary. We’ll do whatever … money won’t be an object. Players are always an object for us and the money will be an impediment, but we’ll figure it out if it makes all the sense in the world for this team.”
Money is not an object?“It’s an impediment. It certainly is a large impediment, and he reminds me of what it means for the future, because basically what it is, is you’re borrowing from the future or your chances of success this year and possibly recouping some of it, but that’s not a business plan to say we’re going to play five and seven game series right through the end of the World Series, it’s just not something you can count on.”
That message will be well received by the fan base.
“The message for me was in the offseason. We made a commitment to completely obliterate our budget and we’re going to do what we can with one very large eye on the future obviously, to do what we can.”
Can they resign Carl Crawford?
“Remains to be seen. Be difficult.”
