Stanley on visiting USF and other tidbits

Taking a break from reading more of Jim Leavitt’s lawsuit and Myrtice Landers’ personnel file, so here are a few USF sports items of note:

++ Former USC linebacker Glen Stanley – OK, he was enrolled but never actually played for the Trojans – visited Florida State on Thursday less than 24 hours after being granted his official release from USC.

Stanley is scheduled to visit USF on Friday and then decide between the two schools on Saturday. The Ocala resident signed with USC after playing for Eastern Arizona Junior College last season but asked for his release once the NCAA leveled some serious sanctions on USC.

Here is what Stanley told Warchant.com on Thursday after meeting with FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff.

“I fell in love with Jimbo Fisher and Coach [Mark] Stoops,’’ he said. “I love the new attitudes and the facilities, and I just like my chances of playing.’’

What about that trip to USF on Friday?

“I don’t know; that’s a good question,’’ he told the FSU fan site. “I want to be done but I told the coaches down there [I would visit],” he said. “I know what I want to do, but I’ll make my decision Saturday. It’s going to be something with my family and I don’t want to go through a big ordeal.’’

Based on Stanley’s comments, sounds like Skip Holtz and Co. have their work cut out in landing Stanley, but in recruiting, you truly never know. Regardless of where he ends up, Stanley will have two years of college eligibility remaining.

++ Based on a couple of conversations with USF sources today, Colorado transfer Darrell Scott remains on pace to join the Bulls next season. Scott will have to sit out a season but the nation’s former top RB recruit coming out of high school has what coaches call a lot of upside.

Holtz is announcing his official roster additions/changes on Wednesday when the Bulls report for the start of fall practice.

As of this moment, here are the transfers set to join the team: Scott, RB Dontae Aycock (Auburn), TE/FB Kevin Gidrey (East Carolina), DB/WR Spencer Boyd (Notre Dame), WR T.J. Knowles (Saddleback [Calif.] JC). Knowles is a late addition to 2010 class and can play immediately.

++ If you’re wondering what’s up with USF’s official announcement about spending a portion of fall camp in Vero Beach, I’m told it’s simply a matter of paperwork being finalized. Stay tuned.

++ USF did add former South Carolina athletic department employee Andy Morris to the staff on Thursday. Morris was hired as USF’s new director of marketing & new media.

++ Caught up with Bulls’ ace Randy Fontanez recently and he remains committed to returning to school unless the Reds throw a curveball and up their offer significantly.

However, Fontanez says he’ll really miss pitching coach Lazer Collazo, who resigned last month to return to Miami. Fontanez’s entire pre-game routine and mound presence are based on Collazo’s coaching.

++ Not sure it matters, but the attorney who represented Stanley is his quest to be released from USC is Shannon Ligon, who was born and raised in St. Pete, earned a degree from FSU in 2003, graduated from the CSB School of Broadcasting in Tampa in 2004, and currently runs a law firm in Orlando.

Here is what she told ESPN.com about Stanley’s next school:

“This is his final pit stop. I expect it to be.’’

Stanley started his career at Bowling Green in 2007, sat out 2008, played in junior college last season. He also committed to UCF and Tennessee at various points prior to landing at USC.
