Staff Shakeup May Start With Mann

TAMPA – We’ve been hearing since the season ended that wide receiver’s coach Richard Mann will probably not be retained.

Now there’s talk from inside One Buc Place that Mann has been told he is free to look for work elsewhere.

If that’s the case, then wide receiver Antonio Bryant may just decide to look for work elsewhere as well.

Bryant has made no secret of his respect for Mann and the work Mann has done in helping him resuscitate his career.

The Bucs, though, appear to see things a little differently, at least in terms of what Mann has done for them.

They have used a lot of draft picks and spent a lot of money on receivers in recent years, yet no one at that position has performed consistently for more than a season.

A good example is Michael Clayton, who caught 80 passes for 1,193 yards as a rookie but has not caught more than 33 passes in a season since then.

The Bucs re-signed Clayton to a five-year, deal worth approximately $26 million last year and they may be hoping a different coach can bring out more in him and few others, possibly including Bryant.

Bryant was hampered by knee problems all season long, but his 39-catch output in 2009 was still seen as something of a disappointment.

Bryant often argued that his lack of production was due to a lack of opportunities and a result of the constant changes at quarterback, where the Bucs ran through three starters in 2009.

A free agent who made $9.8 million as the Bucs “franchise player’’ in 2009, Bryant said as late as the last week of the season that he wanted to return to the Bucs next year. Bryant’s desire to return was based in part, however, on an opportunity to continue working with Mann.
