Riverview is now 2-0 after Spoto was forced to forfeit its 38-0 victory over the Sharks.
The FHSAA confirmed Spoto will have to forfeit its regular season opener because of the use of an ineligible player. The player in question had applied to attend Riverview for school choice and worked out with the Sharks over the summer. But his school choice was not approved and he enrolled at Spoto.
Spoto principal Phil Carr said the school is appealing the player’s eligibility status and hopes that he can return at some point this season.
Spoto’s record falls to 0-2. The Spartans host Middleton on Friday. Riverview improves to 2-0 and hosts Plant City Friday night.
