Spoto’s Davis signs with N.C. A&T State

Spoto senior guard/forward DeAndra Davis, one of Hillsborough County’s top girls basketball players, on Wednesday signed a National Letter-of-Intent with North Carolina A&T State.

Davis chose the Aggies, a Division I program located in Greensboro, N.C., that competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, over Virginia Commonwealth, Central Florida, Florida International and South Alabama.

“It just felt like home when I visited there,” said Davis, who made an official visit to the campus in September. “They welcomed me with open arms.”

Davis averaged 13.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game last season at Armwood. She transferred to Spoto after her mother, Mareka Davis, was named the Spartans’ head coach.

The Spartans tip off their season tonight with a preseason game against Sickles. The game will offer a nice matchup between two of the county’s best girls players; Sickles features junior forward Amber Henson, who averaged 19.2 points per game last season.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Davis said.

Wednesday was the start of the early signing period (it ends Nov. 18) for sports other than football, soccer, track and field, cross country, field hockey and water polo. A few county schools held signing ceremonies for their student-athletes on the first day of the signing period. There are several more scheduled during the next week.
