Spoto won the inaugural Big County Preps 9 Route 7-on-7 tournament at the Fishhawk Sports Complex in Lithia this past weekend. The Spartans went 8-0 in the double-elimination bracket, registering wins over Wharton, King, Middleton, Alonso and Hillsborough. They defeated Wharton in the championship game, 21-6.

14 schools registered for the event, including Tarpon Springs and Wesley Chapel. The Hillsborough County teams that competed were Alonso, Blake, Bloomingdale, Gaither, Hillsborough, King, Middleton, Newsome, Spoto, Strawberry Crest, Tampa Catholic and Wharton.

“We went down there with 12 kids and our kids played hard,” Spoto coach Dale Caparaso said.

Caparaso was especially impressed with his defense, which collected 17 interceptions with five returned for touchdowns. Caparaso also said rising senior quarterback/defensive back Nick Addison played at a MVP level.

“He threw every pass except one,” Caparaso. “He also had four interceptions and one was returned for a touchdown.”

Caparaso said the recruitment of his top four senior prospects is growing by the day. DB/LB Donald Smith has offers from Washington State, Iowa State and Wake Forest, Addison and LB Danny Taylor have offers from Washington St., Iowa State and Ole Miss and receiver Tyrone Baker is being heavily recruited by a handful of Division I-AA schools, namely Elon.
