TAMPA – The suddenly improved Buccaneers defense will be without one of the players who has made it better when it takes on the Jets at Raymond James Stadium this afternoon.
Linebacker Geno Hayes, who ranks second on the Bucs in tackles with 107 and is tied for first with eight tackles for a loss, will sit out today’s game with a sore hamstring.
The Bucs plan to start Matt McCoy in Hayes’ place at weakside linebacker, but there’s a chance Adam Hayward will see increased playing time as well for the 1-11 Bucs.
The Bucs will also be without their top two kick returners. Clifton Smith (concussion) was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week and backup Sammie Stroughter will miss the game with a sore back.
The Bucs will probably use either Earnest Graham, Yamon Figurs or Kareem Huggins as their return men for this game.
Others sitting out for the Bucs today are WR Michael Clayton (knee), CB Derrick Roberson (groin), DL Michael Bennett, G Shawn Murphy, T James Lee and QB Rudy Carpenter.
