ROGER MOONEY
ST. PETERSBURG Here are some gems about Matt Garza’s historic gem Monday and other gems like it, courtesy of the Rays P.R. department.
Garza pitched the first no-hitter in Rays history, leaving the Mets and Padres as the only teams to never experience the joy of a no-no.
It was the fifth time the Rays were involved involved in a no-hitter. The other four:
Boston’s Derek Lowe’s no-hitter April 27, 2002 at Fenway Park.
Chicago’s Mark Buehrle’s perfect game July 23, 2009 at Chicago.
Oakland’s Dallas Braden’s perfect game May 9, 2010 in Oakland.
Arizona’s Edwin Jackson’s no-hitter June 25 at the Trop.
The 31 days between no-hitters at the Trop were the fewest since 1969 when Jim Maloney and Don Wilson of the Astros did it in Cincinnati on April 30 and May 1. The last time two no-hitters were thrown this close together in an American League park was in 1951 when Detroit’s Bob Feller (July 1) and New York’s Allie Reynolds (July 12) did it at Yankee Stadium.
Two no-hitters have been thrown during the last 11 games at the Trop. Before that, the Trop saw 1,006 games without a no-hitter though the Rays came close to getting no-hit on several occasion. Boston’s Tim Wakefield (June 19, 2001) and Pedro Martinez (Aug. 29, 2000) both lost no-hitters at the start of the ninth inning.
Garza retired the final 22 batters he faced, breaking huis club record of 18 set April 30, 2009 against the Red Sox.
Before Garza, Tony Saunders (April 22, 1999 vs. Baltimore) and Dewon Barzelton (June 25, 2004 vs. Florida) came the closest to throwing no-hitters with each going 7 2/3 innings.
Garza extended his hitless streak at the Trop to 13 games.
