RSL Florida’s boys under-18 team produced a major surprise, defeating North Texas champion Andromeda FC 1-0 in its opening game of the U.S. Youth Soccer Southern Regionals in Dallas on Friday.
T.J. East scored the only goal of the game in the second half, receiving the ball inside the penalty area, and firing home a turning, right-footed shot.
While East got the goal, RSL coach Steve Wolf said the victory was a true team performance.
“Everyone stepped up and played well,” Wolf said. “The team was really the star, everyone did their part. We were up 1-0, and we had a guy clear the ball off the line with about 10 minutes to go. If he doesn’t do that, we’re definitely tying that game.”
RSL had opportunities to score before it took the lead. Greg Sasser and Joey Layton each created chances they were unable to finish before East scored what proved to be the game-winner.
RSL will face another tough test in the Dallas Texans on Saturday. The Texans won the Region III Premier Division West, but were upset by the Norcross Fury 3-2 in their opening game. While a win would likely put RSL into the semifinals, Wolf is expecting a hard fight from the Texans, who have to win to stay alive in the tournament.
“They may have a psychological edge,” Wolf said. “They’re in a must-win situation tomorrow. They’re from Dallas, and obviously they lost their first game. We’ll just need to come out and do our best tomorrow.”
