USF defensive coordinator Mark Snyder is now the highest-paid Bulls assistant coach after receiving the largest raise among the team’s nine full-time assistants.

Snyder, who led a unit that ranked 17th nationally in total defense and 22nd nationally in scoring defense last season, got a $50,000 bump from his 2010-11 salary and will make $260,000 this year, according to 2011-12 assistant coach salary figures released Tuesday by USF.

Each USF assistant received a raise, with the increases for the other eight coaches ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

Tight ends coach Larry Scott and defensive tackles coach Kevin Patrick received the next largest bump, each getting $15,000 raises to annual salaries of $135,000. Offensvie coordinator Todd Fitch and receivers coach Phil McGeoghan each received a $10,000 raise and will make $220,000 and $90,000, respectively.

USF’s four other assistants - assistant head coach/defensive backs coach Rick Smith ($205,000 this year), quarterbacks coach Peter Vaas ($190,000), defensive ends/special teams coach Vernon Hargreaves ($190,000) and offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler ($170,000) - each received $5,000 raises.

The salaries total $1.6 million, leaving USF coach Skip Holtz $50,000 to distribute among other staff positions, according to the assistant coach salary pool clause in his contract.

Holtz, meanwhile, will make $1.7 million in 2011-12, an increase of $100,000 from last year.

Snyder deserves it.  He has routinely helped USF’s Defense to be stable and productive.  If he can get our corner backs/secondary up to speed this year he’ll have earned his raise.  Our secondary was not so fantastic last year regardless of what people say.  September 3rd will be the real test (but only the first of many).
