As part of Skip Holtz’s five-year, $9.1 million contract, the salary pool for assistant coaches increased from the amount offered by former coach Jim Leavitt.
That is reflected in the salaries of the five new assistants hired last week by Holtz.
USF released the figures Monday. While some schools have signed assistant coaches to multi-year deals of late—Florida State announced multi-year deals for its new assistants Monday—Holtz’s staff is working on one-year contracts the way Leavitt’s did.
Here are the annual salaries for USF’s nine assistant coaches: Vernon Hargreaves ($185,000), Todd Fitch ($210,000), Mark Snyder ($210,000), Peter Vaas ($185,000), Rick Smith ($200,000), Kevin Patrick ($120,000), Phil McGeoghan ($80,000), Larry Scott ($120,000) and Carl Franks ($170,000).
While Holtz hasn’t officially assigned titles to his assistants, Mark Snyder is expected to be the defensive coordinator, and Todd Fitch the offensive coordinator. Snyder and Fitch are the highest-paid assistants on staff.

It’s probably an improvement, but it looks a little low to me. Scott, how do these compare to other Big East programs or assistant coaches at other Florida schools?

The pay looks better than what I recall with CJL with the exception of all the USF holdovers. They seem equal to or less than their previous contracts.
Good question Dan…..I would also like to see how it compares to past years at USF. It seems we made improvements with the assistant coaching staff but did we improve their pay?
Thanks, Scott.

I think they’re making more, I just wonder if it’s enough to be competitive when compared to other schools we compete against in the BE and in Florida. USF was always losing guys because they could make a heckuva lot more $$$ elsewhere, and maybe we would improve a lot faster if that stopped. Become a destination instead of a stepping stone. Money may do that. Low pay for our assistant coaches was always one of my big gripes.
