TAMPA - Bucs rookie running back/return specialist Clifton Smith has reverted to an age-old remedy to cure his fumble-itis.
Smith, who has fumbled the ball away in each of his last three games, is walking around the Bucs complex today carrying a football everywhere he goes. He even took the ball with him as he walked into the shower area just off the locker room.
When asked if his coaches had forced him to carry the ball everywhere, Smith said, “No, I’m making me carry the ball everywhere.’‘
There’s no question Smith has to do something to cure the problem. He’s fumbled the ball on a kick return, a pass reception and a run.
The Bucs say they haven’t seen anything on tape that indicates Smith is carrying the ball in a vulnerable fashion. Coach Jon Gruden even went so far as to say that at least one of the fumbles was a result of a great play by the opposing defense.
Smith may feel differently. He obviously believes he needs to become more comfortable with the ball in his hands. A day or two of carrying it everywhere may help. Let’s just hope he doesn’t try to drive home that way.

Old school. Nice. At my school, the coach’s made us carry a 12 pack of soda. Seemed to work pretty well. If he fixes that problem, think he may enjoy a nice career in the NFL.

Every once and a while a player comes along that slipped through the cracks and hits it big in the NFL. ONE that come to mind is a guy named Warner, KURT is his first name. Maybe this can be our KURT!!!

Getting E James from the Cardinals would be a great fit. Still a great back ... and running behind our offensive line ... would be a beautiful marriage .... alas though the cardinals arent going to let him go !

Tiki Barber has fumble-i-tis until his coach had him change the way he carried the ball. The change worked wonders. Ask Tiki for advice Mr. Smith.

Depending on the price, Ed James would be a possibility. At the end of this year Derek Ward of the Giants becomes a free agent and Giants most likely will not sign him because they also must shell out for their power back Jacobs who also is a free agent after this season. Meanwhile, why not use Josh Johnson in the Wildcat formation from time to time. Try to add in that wasted draft pick Dexter Jackson as a flanker and add some speed to the offense, on occasion. Come on Coach Dum Dum get creative!!!
