Six months out, “elephant” present

Thursday marked six months to the day before USF’s 2011 season-opener at Notre Dame, but Bulls LB Sam Barrington said “it’s already like the elephant in the room.”

“That’s the epitome of college football, going up there and playing a game like that,” Barrington said. “When you’re young you always dream about playing those types of games and you’re finally being able to do it.”

While an assistant at Notre Dame, USF coach Skip Holtz said the Irish routinely would open the season with Michigan, a looming matchup that produced sharper offseason workouts with the team knowing the challenge that existed right out of the gate. Holtz views the Bulls situation in a similar light.

“I think they understand the level we want to play,” Holtz said, “and they understand the sense of urgency we need to be at that level Sept. 3. ... We’ve got to be ready to go. We’ve got to be ready coming out of the chutes, and we’re going to have to play at a high level to be competitive and win that football game.”
