This report about the Bucs making Chris Simms a two-year offer throws an interesting twist in the 2007 offseason speculation. It makes sense, but isn’t all that meaningful in terms of who starts. Simms is a low-mobility, stretch-the-field kind of player… exactly the opposite of what this offense calls for. Bruce Gradkowski, on the other hand, is a high-accuracy (or so I’ve heard) scrambler that Jon Gruden constantly defends, something he rarely did for Simms. Simms is the better athlete and quarterback, but I don’t think that matters. Ask yourself this: Will Gruden keep the player with the better arm and adjust his offensive scheme to accommodate his strengths and weaknesses? Or is it more likely that Gruden will keep the player that is already better suited to his offense and try to coach him up to perform better? See how easy this becomes when you break it down?
Personally, I would love to see Simms as the starter and have Gruden make some adjustments to his offense. Simms’s natural abilities can’t be taught and that second half against Carolina left me optimistic that if he only had a better offensive line and some plays suited to him that he could really be good. But Gruden is about as likely to embrace major changes to his playbook as he is to embrace the tuck rule. Getting Simms to sign a contract won’t change Gruden’s mind about who he wants as his starter, but it is a smart business move in that it provides some much needed depth to the quarterback position and gives Simms trade value.
If Gradkowski sucks so incredibly badly toward the end of the season, or if he suffers a major injury, the Bucs would like to have at least one guy on the roster who has taken some snaps under Gruden. If nothing else, Simms will push Gradkowski to perform better during camp. If Gradkowski shows marked improvement for the rest of the season, the Bucs can at least get some trade value for Simms with him under contract (assuming Simms’s ego won’t let him play backup to Gradkowski.) Chris has a lot going for him. He’s got a great arm, had some success and his teammates can’t say enough good things about him. But his value clearly diminished after his first three games where he only had about two quarters of decent play. I’m betting the offer doesn’t have to be too high for the Bucs to keep him on the roster, and that can only benefit the team.

Gruden has truley made up his mind of who he wants to QB his team. Bruce’s strength’s is scambling, short and intermediate passes and learns quickly!
Suggest removalbut yet Gruden is trying to make him perfect that and the long ball and he doesn’t have the arm or accuracy for that, and Gruden WON"T point that out he blames that on being young. Now Chris
has proved that he knows this system he has a great long ball, and the touch for short and intermediate passes and if all you had to do was throw a few roll outs in to clear the pocket a few times just do it! we say chris is not mobile well call a play move him around in the pocket and see? I like Bruce but
my vote is for chris.

Gradkowski is a gift to have on the roster as a buck-up. Having a kid like that who can come in in an injury-situation is a wonderful insurance policy. But he cannot be “the guy.” And neither is Simms. Simms deserves to start somewhere in this league. I’d almost feel bad for him if he signed and got stuck being the back-up. The veterans on this team (a la Brooks, Barber) and the young star (a la Cadillac) deserve a veteran QB to make a run at a title. This team CANNOT compete with the powerhouse teams in the league (like New England, Chicago, or San Diego), but this could easily be a playoff team…with a few necessary additions.

Gruden has his mind set on Gradkowski as his starter. I do not think Chris will be back with the Bucs. He knows he will not be the starter and will try his luck some where else. The Bucs will then say we wanted Chris back but he did not want to come back. The Bucs will then get a vet. QB like Jake Plumer from Denver and sit with that. Gradkowski will start and Gruden will tell everone how great he is, and the Bucs will go through a 4 bad year. And as for Chris he will go win a Super Bowl with that team. Just like other QB that left the Bucs

I don;t see why Simms just does not sign with another team. I can not believe that he believes that Tampa will give him anything but a low offer. His agent should be scouting offers and at least make the Bucs pay the prevailing wage. He is not a good fit for the Bucs, but at least half the league teams have offenses that fit his talents. Gruden is not going to change his approch no matter if the Bucs finish 3-13 (unles they beat Cleveland this may be what they end up as). Gradkowski is a better fit, but does not have the arm strength to throw long. You can not coach or teach this.

Simms to Calvin Johnson sounds real good to me for next year!!!!

I think it is time to let Luke McCown (sp?) have a shot (if his knee is ready).
Suggest removalMight as well get him some real time experience and a day off might be just what Bruce Grad. needs.

Chris Simms needs to sign with another team that will give him the chance to start. It should be clear by now that Gradkowski is Gruden’s “fair-haired child” - as oddly worded as that is. Simms has the better arm - but he will just be “used” if he stays in Tampa. In all fairness - he has not even started for a full year yet - and was improving again - just as he did as he progressed last year.

First off chris simms should be signed with the bucs to a 3 year deal. second FIRE bruce allen as gm and get rid of that guy ( jon gruden ) who thinks he knows how to control a offense ( i would rather have the oakland raiders offense of genius (walsh) )Just look at the last 3 to 4 drafts. remember they ( allen, gruden ) won with rich and tony’s guys. Lets all pray that the genius allen gets brain kelly to stay with the bucs until he retires.

the Bucs have lost their minds to offer an extension to Simms. Please let him sign with another team and take Gruden with him. The Bucs will be lucky to win another game this year. Question: will the Glazers keep Gruden around after the Bucs go 3 - 13 for the season?

Bruce is Grudens obvious choice and although Simms has got the heart and soul of most Tampa fans he deserves a system suited more to his skills. If Gruden and Allen are around don’t be suprised to see Quinn to Galloway. Gruden and Allen will probably use high draft picks on offense and look to whatever FA are available to fill the big hole on defense. Poor Monte Kiffin will have to wait to get youth and athleticism on defense. One more thing if we keep losing why not go back to the ugly Orange uniforms, maybe that will motivate the guys to start winning!! Go Bucs!!!!

we should be so lucky as to have a shot at Brady Quinn…he is clearly the most NFL-ready QB since Payton Manning. To be honest, though, I would much rather see Tampa draft Troy Smith (he might be there in the second round b/c of his size) and use that #1, 2, or 3 overall pick on the defensive side of the ball…or maybe even trade down for multiple picks later. This team needs MANY high picks, not one REALLY high picks.

Sure, let Simms go then watch him star for another team. Anyone notice how well players that Gruden/Allen couldn’t/didn’t keep are doing with other teams? Watch any NFL game and you’ll see at least one former Buc playing for one of the teams. Think John Lynch, Joe Juravicious, Keenan McCardell, Dexter Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, Brad Johnson . . . the list goes on and on. And I’m sorry but Gradkowski will never be a very good QB. Good coaching can cure lots of mistakes in a young QB but inaccuracy isn’t one of them and Gradkowski is woefully inaccurate.

Charlie and Shawn you guys are crazy if you think Gruden is going anywhere after this season. The team mortgaged their future for 2002. He is going to fix things and they will not be drafting Quinn or Smith to have another rookie QB. Gradkowski, Simms, and McCown gives the Bucs some great QBs for the future and their are some beast of wide receivers out there (Calvin Johnson) who can take us to the next level as these young guys mature. (A Reggie Nelson wont hurt either) GO BUCS!!!!

You guys need to rember one thing when talking about the draft and Gruden and Bruce Allen. The picks they took in Oakland. How about this one. The Raiders move up in the draft and with there number 1 pick take Sabastian Janikowski from FSU. They do not take Shawn Alexander who will go to the seahawks or a number of other very good player. Now you are saying take a fast recever out of GT. Or take this QB or that QB. First of all Gruden is not going for no QB he has his like it or not it is Gradkowski. Gradkowski can not hit the end zone with the ball from 40 yards out. So also get use to short and med. range passes that defenses will sit on.

Gruden doesn’t have to rethink his game plan for Simms, that’s looking a little too far ahead..
First and foremost, he has to rebuild the DL so we’re not forced to play catch up every game. That forces Gruden into pass mode, rendering any “plan” of his a moot point.
Do that, then continue to focus on running the ball. I loved what I was seeing last Thursday, looks like we’re on the right track..
In turn, if successful, the pressure on the pocket is relieved, and even Gradkowski would find the going alot easier, if he indeed wins the job..

They need to sign Simms back! They also need to sign D.White to a big contract! The first 3 picks or at least 2 of them should be defense! Their safeties stink and they only have 1 good corner. B. Rudd will be a STUD. So add to the defense so they can maybe stop the pass next year!!

Come on guys, look at the big picture. The Bucs only problem is its HEAD COACH. Gruden is one lousy coach. He took Dungy’s Bucs and claimed them as his own and won the Super Bowl. Then being the egotist that Gruden is he gets rid of the Super Bowl winning team why would a sane person do that. So Dungy goes to the Colts and they go to the Super Bowl. If they would get rid of Gruden the Bucs might have a chance. But with the Bucs lousy record I do not know of any coach who would want the team. And what’s this rumor that Gruden wants to go coach the Dallas Cowboys? I would feel very sorry for Dallas.
Suggest removalSign me “former Bucs fan - and now a Colts fan - 10-1.” That says it all - Tony Dungy rules.

Does anyone remember 2005 and what Simms did in the last half of the season? I for one have not. Simms is a far superior QB. Suffering through this season has made me appreciate Simms value to the Bucs even more. He can stretch the field (remember the Washington game last year?) and makes Cadillac Williams an even better runner. The offensive line is improving with every start and by next year they should be a more cohesive unit which will protect the less mobile Simms so he can make his reads and deliver accurate passes to his wide receivers.

Nowhere does it seem that an offseason has carried so much weight on the future of our beloved Bucs. Do we keep Gruden and his puppet GM Bruce Allen? Is it the “polish no deep throw arm” or is it Simms “batted down man” to take our snaps next season? Will be able to somehow convince D White that Tampa loves him and we are willing to show it financially. All I believe is we have the makings of a good offensive line, some sprinklings of good defensive players still around. That is it. We must get better receivers and defensive players through the draft and Free agency. Stay tuned

The bucs have a plethora of talented young receivers on the roster and practice squad. I think Maurice Stoval could be a star if given the chance. Drafting Calvin Johnson (although I feel his ability is superioir to any one on the roster), would only lead to to him recording the same numbers as the receivers before him. The QB sistuation I feel is a good one if we hold on to Simms. We have the talent, Gruden just needs to retool the offensive scheme. Of the 1/3 pass batted down at the line, who knows how many of those could have been completed for big plays or TDs. Go DB with the first draft pick.

I was high in Simms myself after last year, however it seems all the other teams have watched the film on him against Carolina and have all learned how to swat down his 3/4 arm deliveries, significantly contributing to his horrible start this season. I seriously doubt he will be successful in changing his arm angle after all these years. Sign him only if its cheap and/or Gruden plans on throwing the deep ball much more often.

Simms is a fine young QB. There have been many GREAT QBs w/ serious mechanics problems over the years…Simms has the potential to be one of them - in the right system. I think we can all agree that the “right” system for that kind of passer is not in Tampa and not under Gruden. The balls that Simms gets batted down regularly are the short routes, his deep ball is a thing of beauty - we got to see a little of that last year. For some reason, Chucky took the one thing that Simms does best and removed it from the playbook. Go figure!

I think you’re right. Gruden would rather die than admit he really has no clue what he is doing. He’ll keep Gradkowski his starter because he hasn’t almost killed him yet (Carolina Game?). It’s really too bad, but the blame really needs to be placed where it truly belongs. On an ego maniac with more excuses than 25 GWBs.
