TAMPA – If you’re wondering why Chris Simms has been skipping all the Bucs “voluntary’’ workouts this spring, you may want to pick up a copy of tomorrow’s Tribune or check back here for an update to this blog.
I just got off the phone with Simms, who vented everything he has to vent, which is one way of saying he would have vented his spleen if he still had one to vent. But he doesn’t.
And therein lies the problem. Though he still has tremendous respect and feels great loyalty towards the Bucs owners and even their general manager, Bruce Allen, he can’t say the same for his coach, Jon Gruden.
Simms says he can “never’’ forgive Gruden for the way Gruden treated him last year while he was attempting to come back from his spleen injury and just wants to part ways with his coach.
He doesn’t deny that Gruden has taught him things he never knew or helped him develop as a quarterback, but Gruden treatment over the last year has soured Simms to the point where he just wants out of the Bucs organization.
“And that’s hard for me to say,’’ Simms said. “It kills me to say that because the Bucs have been great to me. The fans there are great. I love being in Tampa; my family loves being in Tampa.
“It’s an awesome sports town, a town that loves football. But the relationship between me and coach Gruden, it’s broken. It just is, and I don’t see any way it’s going to get better again.’’

uh-oh, another QB ready to bolt, who will be next? Josh should start studying that play book

I am very disppointed in Simms’ comments.
He never showed any consistent promise for out offense. He got paid $5million to rehab! I second BigBucFans comments. Grow up kid!
Its hard to fail at something. Sometimes a fresh start helps and sometimes it just proves that the mediocre performances weren’t just flukes. Let’s see what ya got somewhere else. I do wish you luck, tho.

After all the team, the fans - and Gruden - has done for Simms, these comments really ##### me off. Even before he got hurt, all he would do is throw game-ending interceptions at the worst possible time. Then he got hurt and the Bucs kept him around and paid his useless ##### for what seemed like forever.
The NFL is a small fraternity, and comments like these are going to come back later and hurt Simms the most. His judgment, persona, and comments off the field are like his playing on the field - very immature.
Good riddance!

I am a big Simms fan. I believe he has some guts (as proven with the spleen injury) and can be an asset to another organization. However, I do not believe that the problem is all one sided. If the Bucs are plannig on getting rid of Simms…do it now. Give the kid a chance.

Simms is not unique. Did you hear Garcia’s interview? Players who do not like Gruden can’t all be wrong.

Well said BigBucFan. You are absolutely correct. I would rather lose also.

Grow up Chris & be a man. Everybody gets mad at their Boss, or hates him or her, but we still get up at 5AM (Broken Interstate) and go to work. See Chris, we don’t have the luxury of having a rich Daddy, or being paid $5mil to ride the pine. Chris, you weren’t 100%. What did you expect Gruden to do? The Bucs should also Ban the words “Roy Cummings” on their website. We don’t need Simms or Garcia’s bad attitudes. I’d rather lose. It’s general principles. Shut your mouths, please. I hope Derrick Brooks whoops your Butt. Chris, I was hoping to see what you could do in camp but I’d rather see what you can do in Camo, in Iraq. Feel lucky & be a man, punk. If your reading this in English, thank a soldier. For Spanish press EJECT.

time to cut bait. i like our chances with garcia, mccown and griese for 2008. granted our long term plans at qb are still questionable (not sure if mccown can be the guy or not), i think we will be fine heading into next season. at least we have 3 capable qbs. simms actually played better than i ever thought he would in the nfl albeit that isn’t a huge statement…i can’t remember how many times i saw him get benched for applewhite in college.
