Simms Among Bucs Cuts

The release from the Bucs that Chris Simms was looking for finally came Saturday. He was let go as the Bucs reduced their roster to 53 players.

Other players cut included LB Patrick Chukwurah, cB Darrell Hunter, WR Chad Lucas and DE Charles Bennett. In a move of local interest the Bucs let go of WR Brian Clark.

Simms had been asking for his release or to be traded since the offseason, when it became apparent to him that he did not have a future here. He said he leaves Tampa Bay with fond memories of his time here.

“It will always be a special place for me and who knows, it’s a crazy league,’’ he said. “Who’s to say I won’t be back here maybe in a few years. Warrick Dunn did it. You never know.

“But I truly did enjoy it here in Tampa. It’s a great sports town, they love their sports, my family loved living here. The beach, the weather - it was a blast. I’m really grateful for the time I had living here.’‘

The Bucs were hoping to trade Simms but with most teams knowing the Bucs would let him go his trade value plummeted even as he proved during the preseason that he was healthy.

Simms next stop is uncertain. The Packers and Cowboys have reportedly expressed interest in him, but the Bears, who sought to make a trade for Simms on draft day, may have more.

The Bears kept three quarterbacks but there is speculation Simms will be added to their roster in the coming days.

Here is the complete list of player let go by the Bucs

DE Patrick Chukwurah
LB Ryan Nece
QB Chris Simms
DE Charles Bennett
G Phil Bogle
DT Chris Bradwell
WR Brian Clark
T Chris Clark
RB Kenneth Darby
T Chris Denman
TE Daniel Fells
CB Marcus Hamilton
CB Darrell Hunter
G Brian Johnson
WR Chad Lucas
DT Dre Moore
T Dennis Roland
RB Clifton Smith
WR Micheal Spurlock
FB Carl Stewart
WR Cortez Hankton (waived injured)
TE Jerramy Stevens, placed on the reserve/suspended list.

Why don’t you credit Pewter Report for reporting those cuts hours ago. You guys are pathetic, and it is no surprise that the print media is dying when a website is beating you to stories.

The Buc FO is a real pain to deal with. They won’t release anything ‘til absolutely forced to. Where are the rest of the cuts? The local media has turned the organization into a top-secret, need-to-know-only type of a team. Great work hacks!

St. Petersburg Times had it before Pewter Report. PR isnt what it used to be, stories you can find on other sites and PR Insider is just a waste of money.

Good Luck Simms, I will be a fan of yours wherever you land.

“Who’s to say I won’t be back here maybe in a few years.”

We can only hope and pray that doesn’t happen.

Eric,

You’re wrong. I’ve been checking all afternoon and Pewter Report had seven of the cut players HOURS before the St. Pete Times had anything. Then Adam Shefter broke that Simms was cut. I’ve been glued to this, and Pewter Report was out in front. Like or not but that is the truth.

With all the speculation on how pi$$ed Simms is/was he left with class thanking the organization and the fans and even saying “who knows its a funny league I could end up Back here” While I have never really beleived in Chris Simms I have alyawys said I like him and its to bad he couldent have gotten realesed any sooner to mesh with a new team I hope he does great, even though he was never any good for us I wish him the best of luck. I just wish he would have steped up and took command but We dident really have any WR’S or an O-Line I think he could have been much better with what we now have.

      (GOOD LUCK CHRIS)

Chris, nope your wrong I’ve at the computer all afternoon and evening. Pewter Report had the first names of cuts hours before either paper did. They didn’t have all the names but they had more than handful. It was on their front page, message boards, and the bucs.com message boards. Even at tbbmb they cited that PR had the cuts before anybody else. Those are the facts, check the times on the posts.

GRUDEN IS A LITTLE NEPOLEON AXS HOLE!!!!!
He planned to do this all along! Now, Chris Simms is going to be limited on the leftover roster spots.
The league is full of players that will testify to the lil’ midget’s lousy character!
I can’t wait for the day that Gruden is told to pack his bags. He and Allen have no class and are running this team into the ground!
Gruden makes it hard to be a Bucs fan!!! I guess he will still have his blind followers that will follow him into the ditch!!!!
Watch that first step!!!!!

The end of a painful divorce. Of course we would end up releasing him at the end of Pre-Season.  Why would anyone give up anything of value knowing that we were never going to keep him? The truth is that Simms played great in 2005, but I always thought he had a shaky quality. His ‘deer in the headlights’ look never made me feel all that comfortable. When the passes started getting batted down at the line in early 2006, I knew he was done.

I heard that Charlie Batch went down in Pittsburgh.  This may be a good fit for Chris as backup to Big Ben.  He’ll land somewhere.

Good luck Chris.  You have to admit that he did leave it all on the field for the Bucs.  We appreciate the effort and wish you well.

OK, So Chris Simms is cut. so What? His Daddy is the only reason he is playing in the NFL anyway. If he was an unkown kid in High School College Etc. He would be NOTHING!!!!!

I’m surprised they got rid of RB Clifton Smith.

Well, amazingly enough the City of Tampa is FULL-OF-SUNDAY afternoon, announcer booth “Quarterbacks!”

The guy played with a ruptured “Spleen!” God help us! I think Chris is who he is, an average (+) team player who gives his all!

It does not matter who his Dad is or when he gets released! Anyone that looks at “Chris” will see a man who leaves his ALL on the field!

I really wonder if all the sarcasim would still be presented if SIMMS would have tragically died the Sunday evening of his serious injury?

While I am being honest & speaking truths…how many of you KNOW-IT-ALL have ever even played High-School Ball, how bout College?

Inquiring minds want to know?

God Bless You Chris and Good Luck!

John Hamilton

So much love for a QB with a sub .500 record and more INTS then TD’s. Tim Brown was right about bucs fans, we are stupid.

Simms played his way to getting cut.  His [non]performance is also the reason no one traded for him.  End of story.
