Bucs QB Chris Simms sounded encouraged after an impressive Friday morning practice that proved he still has plenty of zip remaining in his left arm.
After several days of curtailed activity due to a sore elbow, Simms participated in passing drills and threw with far more velocity than he had displayed previously in camp. On one throw far downfield to Joey Galloway, Simms hit Tampa Bay’s No. 1 wide receiver in stride, prompting cheers from the crowd at the Disney complex.
“It’s been a long time since I hit Joey on a deep ball like that,’’ said Simms, who is competing against Luke McCown and Bruce Gradkowski for the backup job behind Jeff Garcia. “I’m feeling better and I’m getting there. My elbow feels good. Without a doubt, it’s improved, but I’m not firing on all cylinders yet.’’
Since undergoing surgery to remove a ruptured spleen suffered against Carolina Sept. 24, Simms has struggled to regain his throwing rhythm. He has appeared awkward at times, failing to pick up his secondary targets.
“I’m not worried about being first string or second string,’’ Simms said. “This is not an injury that you can go back and look at the records. I’ll keep plugging away. Throwing the ball has never been an issue for me, but I’m a little late, a little inaccurate.’’

A little late, a little inaccurate - what does that spell - TRADE BAIT. He’s lucky to make second or third string. He’ll make for good trade bait and save his salary coupled with that of Rice and if we can pull the plug Clayton - we can go after a good established vet - maybe like Strahan who could serve as a mentor (like Rice was supposed to be) until Adams is ready. Strahan would sign for a year or two and for what the Giants are paying him - he’d surely sign with us for some extra cash up front.

Take his job back from Garcia? lol This is Garica’s team now. The best Simms can do is win the backup job for now.

We could never sign Strahan unless the Giants release him. They won’t even trade him. He’ll either retire or play for the Giants. Simeon Rice is a bluff for them. They are trying to get Strahan in camp. Rice will probably end up signing somewhere else unless Strahan retires soon. But he probably won’t. As far as Simms go it’s good to hear something positive. Decent quarterback that needs some work and more development. Probably will never be great but could be good.
