Hillsborough County:

Sickles’ Dunn signs with Mets

Sickles High baseball player Josh Dunn has opted to bypass college and turn professional.

Dunn, a 25th round selection by the New York Mets in the 2009 MLB first-year player draft in June, signed with the Mets on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not available. Dunn, a third baseman, will report to Port St. Lucie on Thursday and begin his pro career with New York’s rookie affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.

Dunn, a Tribune All-Hillsborough County second team pick as a senior, was the Gryphons’ biggest offensive threat in 2009, hitting .452 with six doubles, six home runs and 27 RBIs. He had previously signed a baseball scholarship with Division I Florida Gulf Coast, but consistently expressed his desire to play professionally since being drafted by the Mets.
