NEW YORK Today’s rain out means James Shields will now start the first game of Tuesday’s day/night doubleheader in Boston.
Jeff Niemann will pitch the night game.
David Price is still set for Wednesday.
Wade Davis, who was scheduled to pitch Tuesday afternoon, has been pushed back to Friday when the Rays open the homestand against the Mariners.
The Rays now have two days off before the Red Sox series.
“We didn’t need two,” Joe Maddon said. “One would have been fine.”
The team is taking a train this afternoon from New York to Boston, so the players will get in a workout today. The hitters will hit in the cage, and the pitchers will find some room to throw.
A makeup has not been scheduled, though it will either be Sept. 20 or 21 and it will be part of a day/night doubleheader, making it the Rays third day/night twin bill of the season.
