James Shields was excited to finish third in the AL Cy Young Award voting when the results were announced earlier this afternoon.
Shields, who was 16-12 with a 2.82 ERA, a major league-leading 11 complete games and four shutouts (tied for the most in the AL), finished behind unanimous winner Justin Verlander of the Tigers and runner-up Jared Weaver of the Angels.
Here are some of his thoughts:
On finishing in the top three:
“After the year I had (in 2010) and how hard I worked in the offseason and how hard I worked during the season, to be third is pretty special.”
On Verlander, who led the major leagues in wins (24), ERA (2.40) and strikeouts (250):
“I know how hard it is to pitch in the major leagues, to see the numbers he put was unbelievable. Obviously, you want to win Cy Young, but if you’re going to lose, it’s good to lose to a guy like him, who had that kind of year.”
On David Price placing second in 2010 Cy Young, Jeremy Hellickson winning 2011 AL Rookie of the Year and Shields placing third in Cy Young:
“I think it really shows what kind of pitching staff we have. Not only do we have one guy, we have a lot of guys. We have a couple of guys on our staff who can chase (Cy Young) again next year.”
