James Shields finished third in the AL Cy Young Award voting, behind unanimous winner Justin Verlander of the Tigers and runner-up Jared Weaver of the Angels.
Verlander received all 28 first place votes for 196 points. Weaver was second with 97 points.
Shields, whose 2012 salary bumps up to $8 million with the incentive clause based on a top-five finish in the Cy Young voting, received 66 points. He received five second place votes, nine third place votes, eight fourth place votes and three fifth place votes.
CC Sabathia finished fourth with 63 votes.
