Rays hitting coach Derek Shelton is on the staff of the Major League Baseball All-Star team that will travel next month to Taiwan and play a series of games against the Chinese Taipei national team in the 2011 Taiwan All-Star Series.

The series is five games played from Nov. 1 to Nov. 6 in three cities – Nov. 1 in New Taipei City (XinZhuang Stadium), Nov. 3 and 4 in Taichung (Intercontinental Stadium) and Nov. 5 and 6 in Kaohsiung (Chengcing Lake Stadium).

“It’s going to be a cool opportunity,” Shelton said. “The opportunity to be around different players and see a foreign land, I’m very excited about it.”

The full major league roster will be announced later, but MLB has received commitments from Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson of the Yankees, Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers and Pablo Sandoval of the Giants.

Shelton, who will bring his father, Ron, along on the trip, said he’s looking forward to working again with Cano, who he managed while a member of the Yankees minor league staff, as well as some of the top hitters in the majors.

“No. 1, the experience of being around different players and a different staff, the quality of players and caliber of players in a relaxed setting will be interesting,” Shelton said. “And when you have a chance to broaden your horizons, you have to take the opportunity.”

Giants manager Bruce Bochy will manage the squad.

Rays clubhouse manager Chris Westmoreland is also part of MLB’s staff for the trip.
