BOSTON—Red Sox starter Jon Lester got most of the attention entering Game 3, but after five innings it’s Rays righthander Matt Garza who has a shutout going.
The Rays lead 5-0 on a B.J. Upton 3-run homer, Evan Longoria solo homer and Dioner Navarro RBI groundout. Garza, bidding for his first win since Aug. 27, has been strong.
Garza has allowed at least one base runner every inning, but he hasn’t given up the big hit. Dustin Pedroia has a double, a single and a walk and hasn’t gotten closer to scoring than second base. Mark Kotsay has a double and a single, and Jason Bay has a single. Garza has kept lead-off man Jacoby Ellsbury and No. 3 hitter David Ortiz hitless for the series. Kevin Youkilis, batting .600 in the ALCS after the first two games, is 0-for-2 against Garza.
Meanwhile, Lester’s night is ending. Manager Terry Francona is bringing on RHP Paul Byrd with two out and one Tampa Bay baserunner in the top of the sixth.
