TAMPA – The Bucs let linebackers coach Joe Barry get away once before but now that they’ve got him back they’re holding on fast to him.
Barry was recently targeted by new Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, but the Redskins request to interview Barry for a job as his linebackers coach was denied earlier this week by the Bucs.
That Bucs denial, which was no doubt issued to former general manager Bruce Allen, may prove to be the first in a string of them.
Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler is currently a candidate for the defensive coordinator’s job in Miami. Should Butler get that job, there’s a chance Steelers coach Mike Tomlin will come after Barry.
Tomlin and Barry worked together as Bucs assistants under Monte Kiffin from 2001-2005, when Tomlin left to become defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. Barry left for a similar job with the Detroit Lions a year later.
Barry returned to the Bucs last year. He is one of at least two Bucs coaches targeted by Shanahan, who is expected to meet with Bucs wide receivers coach Richard Mann today.
Mann has been granted permission by the Bucs to seek work elsewhere and may not be retained. Two other Bucs assistants who may not return are defensive line coach Robert Nunn and defensive backs coach Joe Baker.
The Bucs coaching staff is on vacation and is not expected to return to the offices at One Buc Place until Tuesday. An announcement regarding who has and who has not been retained could come at that time.
